    1. [WIPierce] Pierce County in the Civil War
    2. Debbie Barrett
    3. Hello: I have started another new project. In honor of the 140th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, and the upcoming Memorial day, I am gleaning the names of ALL the Pierce County men who served in units throughout Wisconsin. Several of these are online now, just click on the "Civil War" link on the main page of the Pierce County WIGenWeb site. I hope to have it completed by Memorial Day, just a month away. Doing this reminds me of the terrible things our ancestors went through to ensure the union of our nation. Battles mentioned in these rosters in which these men fought are: Antietam, Wilderness, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville. Some were maimed, some killed, some wounded. But even those who did not receive physical wounds could not have come away from this without scars, invisible as they might be. So this Memorial Day, remember those who have gone before. Honor the trials and tribulations of their time. Many of the dead in these rosters are not buried in Pierce County. Back then, the government did not ship the dead home for burial. If you could not afford to have the body shipped home, or your soldier's remains could not be identified, they were forever buried in the battlefield in which they died. Hope you will find this project of use and interest. Debbie Barrett County Coordinator Pierce County WIGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/
