Lu was born October 13, 1926, the daughter of George and Peryl (Fyfe) Schnell at Sac City, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and has been a member of Spring Lake Lutheran Church, Spring Valley since 1959. Lu grew up in Iowa where she attended Ruthven High School, graduating with the class of 1943. She worked as a dental assistant in Iowa for about four years. On April 13, 1947 Lu married Wayne Helmke at Ruthven. They lived at Cylinder, Graettinger, and Emmetsburg, Iowa before moving to their farm in Spring Lake Township in 1959. Lu was an active member of Spring Lake Lutheran Church. She served various church offices including secretary, treasurer and Sunday School Superintendent. She was Spring Lake Town Clerk for 22 years and also a member of the Elmwood American Legion Auxiliary Post 207. Preceding her in death were here father George, and infant son James Robert, and one brother Richard Schnell. Survivors include her husband Wayne of Spring Valley, one son Edwin Helmke and his wife Cindy of Spring Valley, one daughter Kathryn and her husband Doug Hinzman, 3 grandchildren, Cally Helmke and Heather and Ryan Hinzman. She is also survived by her mother Peryl of Ruthven, Iowa, one brother Duane Schnell of Mt. Pleasant. Iowa, two sisters; Mildred (Emery) Stofferahn of Mesa, Arizona, and Gelena (George) Marsh of Dexter, Iowa, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation was held Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, with funeral services Saturday, August 26, 1995 at 11:00 at Spring Lake Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Keith Holste officiated the service with music provided by organist Dorothy Nelson and congregational singing. Burial was in Spring Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley. Honorary bearer was Leonard Schlosser. Bearers were Curtis Lundberg, Dale Jensen, Larry Whirry, Merlin Place, Gary Peterson and Robert Smith.
