Hi: I just received notice from Nick Schommer, who paid to have the 1850 and 1860 St. Croix and Pierce County census' scanned to CD, that he has received his copy. I then contacted the USGenWeb Census Project National Coordinator. She has informed me that she is expecting her copies in the mail today. This means both census' will be online shortly. Hats off to Nick for his wonderful contribution! I will be placing a link from the Pierce County Census page to the scanned images when they are uploaded. Then on to creating an every name index to each for the Pierce site that will be searchable. The to-do list just keeps growing! Projects I am currently working on: I am nearly 50% complete with an index to the pension files held by the NARA for Civil War soldiers who served from Pierce County. These are only the ones I can positively identify from the rosters placed online earlier this month. This will contain the name of the soldier, widow or other claimant and the state from which they filed, when given. Lots of these people moved on after the war. Uploading obituaries submitted by Joe Waddell and Richard Langer to the Genconnect obit boards. Converting the large HTML data pages to text. I am doing this to make downloading quicker, more friendly to web-tv users and those with older, slower computers and those who have handicaps which require special computers to read the materials. Projects in the works: Transcribing the 1857 "Sketch of Pierce County" by Oliver Gibbs, Jr. & C.E. Young. (not very long, but gives some good detail on the earliest settlement of Pierce County, primarily the Prescott area). STILL working on the 1880 Federal Census (and may be for some time to come!). Have I forgotten anything? I hope not! Debbie Barrett County Coordinator Pierce County WIGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/
