Oct. 10, 1940 P. 1. Charles McGillis, Veteran of The World War, Dead Charles McGillis, a resident of Ellsworth practically all his life and veteran of the World War, took his own life Friday morning. His body was found hanging at the base of the water tower at about 7 o'clock by William Anderson and Avey Merriman, village employees. Coroner Hoyer was at once called and stated that Charles had been dead only a short time. He had left his home at an early hour that morning. The act no doubt committed while in a despondent mood. He was 46 years old. Charles had made preparations to go to New Foundland to work and had told his friends he expected to leave within a week. He was a capable workman and could be depended upon to take care of his assignment. Charles McGillis, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George McGillis, was born in Trenton township June 5, 1895. Shortly after the family moved to Ellsworth. He attended the local schools and in 1917, when the U. S. entered the World War, was inducted into the army. He trained at Camp Grant and in 1918 went to France where he saw hard service with our forces. He attained the rank of sergeant and had a good record in the army. He received his honorable discharge in July, 1919. He was married to Miss Lena Baar of Trimbelle Dec. 27, 1921. They moved o California and made their home at Fresno and Catalina, but returned to Ellsworth in 1925 and this village has since been their home. Surviving besides his wife are three children, Lorriane, Stewart and Darrel, also by a half sister, Mrs. John Price all of Ellsworth. Funeral services took place Monday from the Hoyer chapel with Rev. A. A. Ross officiating. The song service was by Mrs. W. H. Bittner. Interment was at Maple Grove cemetery. The American Legion had charge of services at the grave and a salute to the dead veteran was fired over the grave.
