PHOEBE CHAPMAN - Phoebe Ann Alton, daughter of Samuel and Melissa Alton was born September 6, 1874 in Section 28, Spring Lake Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin, the place which is now owned by her grandson Dale Jensen and family. On November 2, 1892 she was united in marriage to Charles Willard Chapman. They set up housekeeping in Spring Lake. Later they purchased the land which is now owned by Elmer Miller, where they built a home and ran a stone quarry. In 1902 they moved to a farm in the town of Gilman where they resided for 40 years. They retired from the farm moving to Spring Valley until the big flood in 1942 when they moved back to "28" on the same farm they had started house-keeping. In 1951 her husband passed away. Mrs. Chapman then made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Jensen, and family until about 2 years ago. Her health began to fail and she entered the Plum City Community Hospital about one year ago, being confined to her bed most of the time. She passed away May 11, 1960 at the age of 85 years 8 months and 5 days. One brother and four sisters preceded her in death. Also twin boys that were born to this union died in infancy. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Jensen, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also one brother William Alton of Frontenac, Minnesota. Funeral Services were held Saturday, May 14, 1960 at the Spring Valley Congregational Church with the Rev. C.R. Gaylord officiating. Interment was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery at Rock Elm. Pallbearers were Severrean Jensen, Forrest Alton, Gaylon Alton, Garland Alton, Roy Esanbock and LaVerne Recken.
