Dear Melinda: There is inscriptions for the Greenwood Valley Cemetery online at my Pierce County, WIGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/ then click on the cemetery button. River Falls is split down the middle by the St. Croix/Pierce County line. I don't know if there is another Greenwood cemetery in St. Croix or not. The best place to get a St. Croix cemetery listing is by writing to the University of WI-River Falls Area Research Center in River Falls, the address is on the same Pierce County site under the Lookups button. They should have a transcription for the cemetery if it exists in St. Croix County. They could also probably provide you with an obituary. Good luck, Debbie Barrett http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywashin/

The "Gold Star Mother" may be referring to World War II, but I'm not sure. Many families hung a blue flag in the window if they had a child serving and a gold flag in a child was killed in the war. Hi, I'm looking for more information on Otto and Eva (ALTON) GRAPE. They married in Pierce Co. and are listed in 1900 Census as having no children. They are buried in Poplar Hill Cemetery, Rock Elm, WI. Where did they die and what were the specific dates so I can send for obituaries? Did they ever have children? Otto was born May 1870 and D. in 1950. Eva, who had a twin also named Eva who died as an infant, was B. 17 Mar 1880 in Spring Lake, Pierce Co., to Samuel and Malissa (BURNS) ALTON. She D. in 1957. Was the twin who died Eva Evaline ALTON? Thanks, Janet
Janet: Since this couple died after 1907, I would suggest you write to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Madison, WI and request a copy of their death certificates. I believe it is $7.00 per copy, but don't know if that is right anymore or not. That should give you their death dates, birth date and place and possibly the names of their parents. With death date in hand, you should be able to get an obituary through the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Area Research Center. Good luck in your research. Hello: I'm at it yet again. I received photocopies of the "History of the St. Croix Valley" by Augustus B. Easton published in 1909 in the mail yesterday. I have begun to scan and upload the approximately 150 pages regarding Pierce County contained in this multi-volume set. They were photocopied for me by Heidi Nelson of Frederic, WI and many thanks go to her for taking the time to do so. I have scanned them simply because I do not have time to sit and retype each and every page to go online. I am doing an index of each biography contained within these pages to help make it easier to find your ancestor, but do not have the time presently to do an every name index. Only the first chapter, comprising the early history of the county, is currently available, but I will be adding to it almost daily until it is done. It can be accessed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce then by clicking on the "Towns" button, then look for the link near the top of the page. I would also like to remind everyone here that if you have biographies, obituaries, wills, deeds or pension files, there is a place for you to put them on the Internet on the Pierce County site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce then click on the "Genconnect" button. This will take you to a page where the various GenConnect boards can be accessed. It only takes a few minutes to add your materials and will help make it easier for other researchers to find you, as well as adding material to the Pierce County project!!!! It's painless and free so I hope to see them start growing soon! Good luck in your research and Happy 4th of July to everyone! Hello list: The following was sent to me by another CC in Wisconsin. I have signed and encourage all on this list to take a look at it to see if they might consider signing as well. Debbie Barrett <Hi Fellow Researchers, I have just read and signed this online petition: "National Cemetery Protection Act" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.petitiononline.com/sg0001/petition.html I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Several years ago I was witnessed two headstones that had been removed from their base by vandals. This was at a local cemetery, what I witnessed really got to me as the caretaker of the cemetery proceeded to back his truck up and toss both stones into the back of the truck, breaking one of them. When I got a bit upset and asked why in the world he did that, why didn't he simply find the grave and place them back, I was told that the graves were old, the families don't care anymore and he simply didn't have the time. This kind of stuff we need to put a stop too. Major legislation is necessary NOW!!! If you have a minute, please take a look at the petition, Thanks for your time and have a wonderful holiday weekend, Debie>
Hi: I know I have run across the McKay name in the past, but can't remember who is researching. Hello all: I received notice from Rootsweb that a merger with Ancestry.com is in the works. For now there will be no change in service provided and Rootsweb will maintain it's presence on the Internet and continue to provide services at no cost. It appears the costs involved in providing Internet services have become too great for Rootsweb to maintain without financial backing. Don't bail out of the lists now - let's see what develops. I imagine we are going to have to consider the benefits of commercial genealogical web sites. At least Ancestry.com is a top quality operation. I think we can expect fair treatment from this venture and perhaps added opportunities for not-too-expensive on-line research. We can all do our part to support the free genealogical services we now enjoy by going to www.rootsweb.com and donating just a few dollars (I think it is $12.00 per year) to help them out. The only reason this merger is taking place is because they could not get enough people to donate to cover the costs of maintaining the thousands of mailing lists, gedcoms, county pages and special Archives projects that we all use. These losses have been coming out of the pockets of the founders of Rootsweb for years. I will be keeping track of developments on this. Should status of the USGenWeb project, which hosts the Pierce County site I run for free now change, I think we as a group will need to discuss what is to be done with the mountain of information that has accumulated on that site since I took it over in November 1997. I would very much like to see it remain free and will NOT be giving it over in any way, shape or form to a pay-for service. I would be happy to maintain the site, but would need help in the way of donations to maintain the web space, which at this point in time would run about $270.00 per year. Something for us all to think about. But don't panic yet, for now we are still free and staying put. Just wanted to give you a heads up on this one.
