R. (Cap) Tyler in Home at Bay City, Wis. C.R. (Cap) Tyler, pioneer river pilot and lumberman, who was widely known on the upper river, died Saturday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock in his home at Bay City, Wis. He had been in failing health since last July. He, however, had been up and around until last Friday. Mr. Tyler was born at Bay City on July 5, 1859, and made his home there throughout his life. He was engaged in the lumbering business for many years, retiring about 20 years ago to become commercial fisherman [sic] logging steamers on the upper river and knew the channel as few men did. In connection with his lumbering operations he ran sawmills in the section. The marriage of Mr. Tyler to Martha G. Miller, of Prescott, Wis., was solemnized on March 17, 1881. Mr. Tyler took a great interest in collecting curios and relics, boasting one of the finest collections to be found in this section. His geological and archeological specimens have been the subjects of much study by university men. The museum in the Tyler home has drawn hundreds of visitors and there was nothing "Cap" liked better than to entertain visitors and show them around, giving graphic accounts regarding the various specimens. His widow, two sons and three daughters survive. The children are: Rolland M., Minneapolis; Clinton, Bay City, Wis., Mrs. F. L. Stone, Prescott, Wis.; Mrs. A. L. Lipinski, Racine, Wis; ans Mrs. E. D. Lande, Bay City. A brother, C. P. Tyler, Bay City, Wis., a sister, Mrs. Mary Sherburne, Spokane, Wash., 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren are also left to mourn his loss. A daughter, Mrs. Everett Harding, died last year. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock from the family residence and later at the Bay City church, the Rev. Everett Hall officiating. Burial will be at the Bay City cemetery. (clipping from family collection. 2. Posted on: Pierce Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PierceObits/10018 Surname: ------------------------- Dorthey E. Pennington Dorthey Evelyn Pennington, River Falls, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 28, 2001, at the River Falls Area Hospital. She was 88. She was born Oct. 6, 1912 in Vermillion, S.D., the only child of Guy Emory and Bertha Lucas Basom. She moved with her family to Fairmont, Minn., where she attended school and nurtured talents in music, writing, and reading literature and poetry. She served as co-editor of the school’s first annual yearbook. After graduating from high school in 1931, she attended St. Mary’s Preparatory School in Faribault, Minn., and then returned to Fairmont. She married Ray Austin Pennington on Feb. 10, 1933 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Fairmont. Shortly after the couple’s first child, Susan, was born, the family relocated to the South where Ray served as a field medical aide with the Tennessee Valley Authority. She returned to Fairmont while Ray attended medical school in Chicago, and afterward took his young family to Luck to begin family practice as a small town physician/surgeon. The practice later took family from Luck, to Corpus Christi, Tex., and Albany, Ore., before settling in River Falls in 1953. In the early years of marriage, she was a homemaker raising the couple’s three children. She and her husband took flying lessons in 1945, both completing their pilot’s license, the first woman pilot in their area. In 1963, when their youngest child graduated from high school, Dorthey enrolled at UW-River Falls, taking courses with daughter Kathleen and son Bruce. She completed a double major in English and biology and graduated with honors in 1967 along with Kathleen. Upon her husband’s retirement from active practice in 1968, the couple relocated to Texas where Dorthey taught high school English for several years before returning to River Falls. Although she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in midlife, her mind wasn’t curtailed by her restricted mobility. She took college classes and remained active in the local library, bridge clubs and League of Women Voters. She cable-knit sweaters, afghans, caps and mittens for family and friends. She and her husband also made special jointed teddy bears. Each was carefully adopted out to a special child, or in some cases adult, as in the bear made for son Bruce during his prolonged illness. This special bear included a knit athletic sweater and the letter ‘R" donated by the late Ron Wunrow. She is survived by her husband "Doc" Ray Pennington; two daughters, Susan Elizabeth (Dan) McKnight, of Layton, Utah, Kathleen Mary (Ferd) Kojis, of Salem, S.C., and daughter-in-law Patricia Grant (Bruce) Pennington of Renton, Wash.; grandchildren Jeffrey (Rhonda) and Guy (Sheree) Pennington, both of Kent, Wash.; Penni (Larry) Blatterman, of Untergruppenbach, Germany, and Robin Austin Hay, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; great-grandchildren Krysta, Chelsi, Katie, Michael and Kyra Pennington. Her son, Bruce Jerome, and sister-in-law Fern Pennington Lamont precede her in death. The funeral was Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in River Falls, the Rev. Jenny Arneson officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church, River Falls, or the River Falls Public Library Foundation.

    3. I have great news for everyone. Nick Schommer has ordered the 1850 St. Croix County Census on CD in its entirety. It appears it will be online in the archives within the next 2-3 months. I will make an index to it that will be searchable on the Pierce site listing name and page. Also, when checking this morning I noticed the 1860 Pierce County census was also on order. I have not received notification from anyone that they have done this, so don't know who to thank. I emailed S-K to see if I could find out from them. Another great boon to the Pierce site will be online very shortly as well thanks to this unknown person. We are also up to 3 donators on the 1900 census. Keep it coming in guys, it is very much appreciated! It's nice to see the spirit of giving so alive and well in Pierce County! 3. Hello: Per my last email regarding the 1900 census and S-K Publications, this appears to be a go. I have already signed up as has another member of the group. So that leaves 22 more donations to go. I will be posting the info and the link on where to go to donate on the website in the What's New section and on the Census page to help generate interest outside the list. I am also considering sending out a blanket email to all who have used the site in the last 3 years, so if you get a second notice from me, please excuse it. Thanks for your input. Hope that we can get this census up and running this year. I know it would be a great boon to many researching in Pierce County. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. 3. Hello: Wanted to run this by the list. S-K Publications is willing to scan the original censuses for Pierce County, WI and donate a copy to the USGenWeb Census Project, if ordered and when completed, which they say takes about 3 months. They do it on a request basis and it works like this. They need 24 donators for the 1900 census at a cost of $20.00 each. Is this something people researching in the county would be willing to help fund? The details can be found at http://www.skpub.com/genie/census/wi/pierce.html As the 1900/10/20 censuses are larger than what most of us have time to transcribe, I was hoping we could do it this way for those years. I will still be transcribing the 1860 and 1870 by hand and we will hopefully be finishing the 1880 census some time this year. This would be a HUGE leap forward for the Pierce County site in its efforts to help those researching their families. Thanks for your input. If there is interest, I will post to the website for others to donate as well. Debbie County Coordinator Pierce County WIGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/
