Hi: I just received notice from Nick Schommer, who paid to have the 1850 and 1860 St. Croix and Pierce County census' scanned to CD, that he has received his copy. I then contacted the USGenWeb Census Project National Coordinator. She has informed me that she is expecting her copies in the mail today. This means both census' will be online shortly. Hats off to Nick for his wonderful contribution! I will be placing a link from the Pierce County Census page to the scanned images when they are uploaded. Then on to creating an every name index to each for the Pierce site that will be searchable. The to-do list just keeps growing! Projects I am currently working on: I am nearly 50% complete with an index to the pension files held by the NARA for Civil War soldiers who served from Pierce County. These are only the ones I can positively identify from the rosters placed online earlier this month. This will contain the name of the soldier, widow or other claimant and the state from which they filed, when given. Lots of these people moved on after the war. Uploading obituaries submitted by Joe Waddell and Richard Langer to the Genconnect obit boards. Converting the large HTML data pages to text. I am doing this to make downloading quicker, more friendly to web-tv users and those with older, slower computers and those who have handicaps which require special computers to read the materials. Projects in the works: Transcribing the 1857 "Sketch of Pierce County" by Oliver Gibbs, Jr. & C.E. Young. (not very long, but gives some good detail on the earliest settlement of Pierce County, primarily the Prescott area). STILL working on the 1880 Federal Census (and may be for some time to come!). Have I forgotten anything? I hope not! Debbie Barrett County Coordinator Pierce County WIGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/
Hello: My last message regarding this may have gotten lost in the blizzard of Obituaries I have been posting. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be done in a few days postings the obituaries sent to me by Joe Waddell. They are from the Spring Lake Lutheran Cemetery. By default these go to the Pierce County Mailing List, so I apologize for all the mail this is generating, but hope you will be patient. The next time these are submitted, it might just be a family you are working on. I appreciate your patience. On October 4, 1870 she married Carl Hogenson and in April of the following year they came to America. After living for a few weeks at Highland Prairie, MN., they came to Pierce Co., settling on the farm in Spring Lake which has since been their home. Six children were born to them - four boys and two girls - of whom four survive. Hogan, Anton and Inga at home, and Clara, married to Milton Anderson, also of Spring Lake. Mr. Hogenson died June 18, 1911. About eight years ago, Mrs. Hogenson sustained a fracture of the hip which crippled her so that she was unable to walk without the aid of a chair. The last year or so her health failed rapidly. On Sunday July 4, 1926 her long and useful life ended. Funeral was held from the home and the Spring Lake Lutheran Church, Rev. Berven officiating. Her body was laid to rest beside her husband and two sons. The death of Mrs. Hogenson marks the passing of another of the pioneers of Spring Lake, whose ranks have been thinning rapidly the last few years. Before long they will all be laid away in their last resting place. Mrs. Hogenson and her husband were charter members of the Spring Lake Lutheran Church and were among its most loyal and faithful supporters. Besides her four children, she is survived by an older sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sorhus in Norway and one grandchild. Posted on: Pierce Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/PierceObits/10116 Surname: Hogenson, Ryhaug, Jacobson, Nelson, Stevens ------------------------- Spring Valley Sun, March 18, 1943 Ragnhild Ryhaug Hogenson Ragnhild Ryhaug Hogenson was born to Jorgen and Marit Ryhaug, Aug. 21, 1856, in Foldalen, Norway. In 1877 she came to America, first to Hixton, Wis., and from there to Pierce county where she married Jacob Sivilhaug Hogenson at the Gilman Center rural school on June 12, 1878, the Rev. Marcus Thorson officiating. The following year (1879) they settled on the farm in Spring Lake which has since been their home. Five children were born to them three boys and two daughters four of whom survive: Christine (Mrs. Charles Jacobson), of Spring Lake; John of Minneapolis; Henry, at home; and Minnie (Mrs. Henry Nelson), of Minneapolis. For several years Grandma Hogenson has been in declining health, due to several serious sick spells and to her advanced years. She has, however, been up and about most of the time, doing her bit in the old home where she lived and labored for so many years, and which she loved dearly. About six weeks ago she became critically ill. For a time good hopes were held out for her recovery in spite of her great age, but her condition took a turn for the worse, and it soon became apparent that her days were numbered. A little after midnight Tuesday, March 9, death came to her relief, at the ripe old age of 86 years, 5 months and 16 days. Besides her four children she leaves five grand-children, and as far as known she also leaves an older brother Ole Ryhaug, in Norway, who is past 90. Mr. Hogenson died Jan. 21, 1927. A sister of Mrs. Hogenson, Mrs. Marie Stevens, died in 1931. A granddaughter of the deceased, Miss Roslyn Hogenson, has joined the WAVES and at present is in training at Cedar Falls, Iowa. The funeral was held from the home and Spring Lake church on Friday, March 12, Rev. Berven officiating. Mrs. Hogenson's death marks the passing of another of the old settlers of Spring Lake, whose ranks have dwindled almost to the vanishing point. She will be sadly missed, not only in the old home on the Ridge but also in the community, and especially in the Spring Lake Church and the Ladies' Aid, of which she has been most faithful and active member. Mrs. Hogenson was blessed with a ready wit, and exceptionally keen mind and a good memory which the passing years failed to dim.
