    1. [WIPEPIN] Patraw origins
    2. I've subscribed for three months to the online site of the PRDH (Programme de Recherche en Demographie Historique de l'Universite de Montreal) and have been exploring their data bases. Francois Petrin was from Greneuville, France. He is on an April 26, 1736, list of men sent from France to Quebec on the ship Le Heros with an agreement to stay there for the rest of their lives. They were all "faux-saulniers." At the time, France had a very high excise tax on salt, strictly enforced. At best, the was an excise tax invader; at worst, he was a salt-smuggler (I can't tell the exact context without more than the list). The excellent genealogical news is that also on the list was one Georges Jarry, who later signed as "cousin" on the record of Francois's burial, 5 March 1759, Vercheres (he a resident of Yamaska).
