About 1850/60 Thomas J. Stokes and his first family, moved to Durand from Indiana to Pepin Co. He first was in Bear Creek, but then moved into Durand. He was for a time, owner/operator of the Eagle Hotel in Durand. His son, (my G/Grandfather Oliver Stokes) built the Stokes hotel which is still in use in downtown Durand. Thomas had two large families, the first one with wife Margaret COVE Stokes. She either died or they divorced and he married Huldah TAPLIN, with which he had another large family, and finally in his later years Arethusa HUGHES. Sometime prior to 1860, the CATUR(I)A family moved to the Arkansaw area and set up a number of farms. I understand there are still some Caturia's in the area. My G/Grandmother (wife of Oliver Stokes) was Myra CATURA. Also in the early to mid 1800's Andrew or Joseph KAINZ immigrated into the Durand area from either Austria or Germany. My grandmother was Ann Kainz. Does anyone have any information on any of these families???? I have quite a bit on Thomas Stokes and his families, but still have many gaps.
