Then I found on a different death certificate where some one was buried in Durand, is Forest Hill the only cemetery in town in Durand? Thank you for any help that you can give me. Joanne Rohrscheib

    3. Hi, I'm researching my Silvernail, Crandall and Merchant families in Albany, Pepin County. I would like to know which newspaper newspapers covered that area or were close. Albany was probably too small to have their own paper. I'm hoping to find information on my ancestors especially in the 1800's. Thank you, Mary Silvernail

    2. David Phelps showed up on the 1880 Durand, Pepin County census along with his wife Sarah S., and children Dolly Belding, Mary Phelps, Cora Phelps and grandson Charles Belding, David Phelps was listed as the County Treasurer. Does anyone have any information on this family. Where they died and were buried. On Dolly's marriage registration her father's name is listed as Daniel. Dolly probably died between 1887 and 1891. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Helen Belden Moody

From what I've heard, train travel at that time was more likely than wagon train to WI. Although I've also heard that boat travel through the Great Lakes to Milwaukee or Chicago was also a possibility. Might you have any insights into how the French Canadians who immigrated to Pepin County in the 1860s most likely got there from NY state? >> I think it very likely that at least some of the Patnodes and LaPeans came together, since they were much intermarried. The story that was given me was that from the shore of Lake Champlain near Chazy, Clinton Co., NY, they got into their paddleboat and started paddling. They went up the lake, up the Richelieu river, and stopped to visit the family at Ste-Genevieve-de-Berthier and St-Cuthbert. Then, back into the boat, and paddle some more, up the St. Lawrence, through Lake Ontario, and down the south shore of Lake Erie as far as Toledo, Ohio, where they wintered over and lost a couple of the crew through matrimony; also picked up a couple of new folks through matrimony (I have corresponded with one of the Toledo group--they use Barror derived from Berard rather than LaPean derived from Lepine). Next spring, as soon as weather permitted, back into the boat; up around Michigan's lower peninsula to Green Bay; portage over to Lake Oshkosh; short portage over to the Wisconsin River and down to Prairie du Chien; then up the Mississippi to the Chippewa at Lake Pepin. They must have had muscles on top of muscles on their paddling legs; no wonder they built an altar out of the boat! On the other hand, I have not been told that any of the other families did it that way! Virginia

    3. Thanks everyone for the help. Since Swede had not visited that cemetery since the '50s, I guess his memory was a little different, but the one you have described as Memorial is the one we couldn't think of. Four years ago we visited Little Plum Cemetery, West Frankfort and a cemetery near Pepin; however, it began snowing (and since I am from a moderate climate...I do mean snowing!) we did not make it to the cemetery where the rest of his family is buried. We were looking for the family name Kallstrom for beginners, but there are probably many more members of the family there, too. We will certainly be looking forward to seeing even more cemeteries online thanks to your wonderful volunteers, and of course are grateful for the ones you have already done. Thanks, Cathy in Oregon (and the native Wisconsinite, "Swede" whose family came to Pepin County by 1870)

But the French Catholic cemetery -- the one on Dead Lake Prairie -- certainly isn't on anything I would call the top of the hill, and I've never heard it described as being in Arkansaw. On a hot summer afternoon, French Catholic is right down on those flats, without even a stir of breeze coming your way! Memorial is right on top of the hill as a person comes up out of town, and I think that it is the only one actually in Arkansaw. There's a hill some distance from the French Catholic cemetery (you can see it when you're standing there). There used to be a shrine in the cave in it, made of the paddle wheel of the boat that the LaPeans came on. Jim's aunt Norma remembered that Grandma Til (Matilda (LaPean) DeMarce Caturia) used to take her up there when she was little, after they had visited the cemetery on memorial day. Virginia

    3. Hi Bill and Connie, Thaks for the comment on the Eagle hotel. I know there are several cousins who would really like to have any info on it you can find. As I had mentioned in a reply yesterday, it was my gggrandfather Thomas Stokes who ran it. Also as mentioned, his son Oliver, built the Stokes House hotel in 1899. When we were last in Durand we found it based on a postcard they have over in the old courhouse, and it was a bar at that time. It is a fairly large brick building a couple of blocks west of the bridge on the southwest corner on the main drag. I don't remember the name of the bar but maybe that is the one you call T-Birds. Possile??? In any case, we sure will be anxious to hear what you find. Seems the Stokes' and their comparable Caturia families (my ggrandmother who married Oliver Stokes was one of them) were pretty active in and around Durand from about 1860 on. Still a lot of the Caturia's around, especially around Arkansaw. Thanks again for your help Gordon Madison William & CJ Weber wrote: > Hi Everyone!! Connie Weber here !
