"NC Wills: A Testator Index 1665-1900 v. 1 & 2" by Thornton W. Mitchel: George Wynns, Bertie Co, 1751, recorded copy in Sec of State Archives, shelf # 879, p 18; original in Sec of State Loose Wills in State Archives. The Martin County, NC Wynnes have been traced back to the early 1700's in this area of NC. The family name was evidently Wynns at that time. Captain George Wynns of Bertie County was elected a member of the N.C. Assembly on April 13, 1732 from Precinct of Bertie. The "s" appears to have been dropped in the early 1800's and as I understand it, the "e" was added to help the local Agriculture office better keep track of the records of the farming records of the Wynn's in the county. There is a reference to a pair of brothers going back to England prior to the civil war to retrieve family members but they were never heard from again. That is the only hint given as to where this family originated. According to my father, there were Wynnes that traveled back to NC from Missouri to visit family here but he does not remember anymore about them. If anyone had more information to help me with I would very much appreciate it. Thanks, George outfiter@williamstonnc.com
