    3. I recommend "William Johnson's Natchez". I have both books and read "The Barber of Natchez" first. It has little that is not found in "William Johnson's Natchez" which is William Johnson's diary for 1835 to 1851 when he was murdered by Baylor Winn. Johnson recorded very detailed items that occurred in his daily life that reveals much about how life must have been for a free black in Mississippi during the period before the Civil War. Plus it gives much insight about the white people in Natchez and their daily lives. It is very good reading for information about life in the early 1800's. There is a 64 page Introduction to the diary that tells much about the trial, the evidence and various aspects of that trial. I think a bonus to this book is found in the footnotes. In these footnotes, one can find numerous references to three Winn families in Natchez during the period 1835 - 1851. I found the diary to be very interesting. Also, check out www.georgiawinn.com for information about Baylor Winn after Natchez, and his descendents. Do either of them go into detail about the murder trials of Baylor Winn and the evidence that was produced about his family? Thanks for your opinion on this.
