He was born in Hampton County, SC and moved to Savannah in 1958 from Ridgeland, SC. He retired from Savannah Electric and Power Company after 32 years of service. He was a US Navy veteran having served during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion post 135, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, and a former member of the Pope Hunting Club. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth, the Pioneer Sunday School Class and was a past Deacon. He is survived by his wife of 54 year, Frances Jarrell Smith; three sons and a daughter -in-law, Michael Dale Smith of Pt. Wentworth, Roger Arnold Smith of Rincon, Carl Lloyd and Dana Smith of Guyton; three brothers, Fred Smith of Hardeeville, SC, Jake E. Born April 17, 1934 in Hampton County, he was the son of the late J. Shelly Jarrell and Katie Sanford Jarrell. Bill served his country in the United States Air Force and later worked in the shipping department of Raytheon Radar Systems in El Paso, TX, retiring after 38 years of service. His favorite pastimes were working in his garden, hunting, fishing and simply enjoying his retirement years. Married to the late Areli Gil Jarrell, he is survived by one son, Bill H. Jarrell Jr. of Orting, WA; one daughter Darlene Nocek of Ithaca, NY; one brother, Bobby J. Jarrell of Nixville and three sisters, Frances J. Smith of Port Wentworth, GA, Eunice J. Winn of Beaufort, SC and Christine J. Parrot of Hillard, FL, as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by one brother, Barney M. Jarrell. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths. ----- WINSTEAD, Annie APPLETON - Mrs. Annie Jarrell Winstead, 86, of 1897 Appleton Road near Allendale, died early Monday morning at her residence after a brief illness. Mrs. Winstead was born in Hampton County, August 16, 1919; a daughter of the late James Jacob Jarrell and Hattie Clara Winn Jarrell. She was a former Seamstress and Inspector with both the Estill and Allendale Manufacturing Companies, and was a member of the Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Claude Winstead. Surviving are, sons, Claude E. Winstead of Allendale, Jim Winstead of Cottageville, and Dennis Winstead of Fairfax; daughter, Sara Ann Sanders of St. Matthews; brother ,Barney Jarrell of Charleston; and sister, Corrine "Pet" Crosby of Charleston. There are eight grand children and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Peeples Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street in Hampton, conducted by Elder Robert Dobson, with burial in the Thames Cemetery near Varnville. Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and Wednesday until the hour of service. Winstead Sr., age 66, died Sunday, January 31, 2010, after an extended illness. Mr. Winstead was a native of Ridgeland, SC, and the son of the late Claude and Annie Jarrell Winstead. He had retired as a maintenance supervisor from Allendale County Schools, was former owner of Winstead Heating and Cooling, and was employed by Goodson Grocery. A graveside funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010, in Swallow Savannah Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Catoe officiating. Survivors include two sons, Claude E. "Chuck" Winstead Jr. (Kippy) of Allendale, and Daniel M. Winstead (Annette) of Barnwell; two brothers, James P. Winstead of Cottageville, and Denis Winstead (Debby) of Fairfax; one sister, Sarah Ann Sanders (Tom) of St. Mathews; two grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter, Tracy Winstead. Friends and family of Mrs. Corrine J. Crosby are invited to attend her funeral service on Sunday afternoon, December 21, 2008 at 1:30 pm at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC. Burial will follow at Adnah Methodist Church Cemetery in Islandton, SC. A visitation will be held at the funeral home this evening, Saturday, December 20, 2008, from 6:00 until 8:00pm. Mrs. Corrine H. Jarrell Crosby was born in Varnville, SC on May 28, 1925, the youngest of 10 children born to the late Mr. James Jacob Jarrell and the late Mrs. Hattie Winn Jarrell. In her younger years, she lived in the Varnville and Hampton, SC area until she married the love of her life, Mr. Franklin Amanuel Crosby, on March 13, 1945. She had been an active member of Remount Road Baptist Church since 1945 serving in many groups at the church. She was a member of 'TOPS' in Summerville. She was a home maker and was a 'model' grandmother. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her two daughters, Faye Hummell, and her husband Chris, of Ridgeville, and Lynn McDowell, and her husband Johnny, of Columbia; four grandsons, Troy Jeffcoat, and his wife Angie, of Summerville, Nicholas Hummell of Columbia, Eric McDowell, and his wife Julie, of Columbia and Justin McDowell, and his wife Leslie, of Columbia; and six great-grandchildren.
