Dear Randy, It's hard to know where to start in responding to your plea. But I fear you have fallen prey to a trap common to those beginning to look into the "Wynnes" (Winn, Wynn, Gwinn, etc.). Sir John's book is a famous and historic tome, and he was a notable figure in his own time but, altho he had ten (legitimate) children, he had no direct descendant lines. And no desc. who ever came to America, even tho you will find various books speculating that one of Sir John's sons, Owen Wynne, did have desc. who came to Va. and even that Owen came but returned to Wales --- not so. Owen Wynne lived and died in Wales. You need to know that research is still very much needed to establish the links of a number of Winn/Wynnes to their English and Welsh origins, and also that some such links have been well documented. If you want other Winn/Wynne folks to help, you'll have to give us a starting point for your particular family line. Who is the earliest Winn/Wynne from whom you can prove descent? Where and when did he live? I am attaching an info piece I did to help clarify some of the confusions that have become all too common --- Wynne mythtakes, I call them. Good luck in your search. I know that the information I now have on my website: http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn/index.htm is full of errors and I humbly submit the following observations/opinions knowing there are some people that have put a lot more time and effort into the Winn/Winne/Wynn/Wynne/Gwynne family than I have and will always know more than I do about much of the lineage and history. I am trying to establish sources for my Winn line and to make my website a helpful tool in finding and linking all the many family relations. I want to eventually have a link to everything of personal interest (to my relatives) that I don't cover in my site. And to have a useable reference that will help and not confuse others in tying to their lines. I have thought it best to do it in two parts: a.. GWYNNE: All those ancestors before immigration to America (assuming the move was around the 1600s). There seem to be many versions of the Wynne/Wynn lines in the 17th and 18th centuries. It would be nice, if possible, to establish a strawman version to work off of with links to other versions where warranted. I found an amazing book on Google Books: The History of the Gwydir Family http://books.google.com/books?id=DCoAAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA62&dq=gwydir&lr=#v=onepag e&q=&f=false It a book written in the 1600 by Sir John Wynn (updated 1878 by Askew Roberts) with manuscripts found at Winnstay. I put much of the genealogy into my database program and plan to make a GEDCOM file corresponding to this book and it's lineage. I thought I would convert this to what will become the GWYNNE website a.. WINN: Everything since down to my mother, Beatrice Winn http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Bea/index.htm For this I will use what I have collected over the years, trying to cover as many ancillary lines as possible (maybe, in some cases, only mentioning I have additional info not on the site itself). If I can tie one to the other (GWYNNE--WINN), I will but I don't want to assume the ties as has been done in the past. I don't subscribe to the immigration, census, etc. data so I can't use that to pin down immigration and sort through the Virginia Winns. What I am asking my many cousins is weather I'm wasting my time and this already exists or it is impractical for some reason I haven't thought of. And, if there is a way to do this without starting from scratch or using the wrong data, I really could use some help. In my research so far, I found Wiki to be an incredible storehouse of well-presented information. Randy C. Myles, I just wish that you would get everything you have an publish it. Of couse I would really like for you to find my George Winn (married to Rose Bush). I still think he fell from the sky and landed in NC (still can't prove he was in VA.) Thanks for keeping everything straight. Marilyn
Marilyn- What Myles mentions in "Mythtakes" is just a small part of the entire collection. Much of the collection Myles references have been rendered to pdf file format. For example I scanned Dwnn's Heraldic "Visitations of Wales and part of the Marches" some years ago and it is over 800 pages and many megabytes (now it is accessible in low resolution on Google). If there is anything you find that you especially need I may be of some help with? My interest is primarily with English and Welsh Wynne records where Myles is the expert on Virginia Wynne and Gwydir Wynn lines. Over the years I have accumulated a number of 17th century Wynne wills and land patents (all spellings). Some have been transcribed others not as they do not pertain to a Virginia emigrant. The original Wynne wills are copyrighted by the PRO and so are not legally able to be distributed. If you search for Wynne at the PRO website and A2A you will discover hundreds of 17th century Wynne's (all spellings) who must be regarded as potential ancestors for some of us American Wynne's. There is also a massive collection of Wynne's in Sir Percival Boyd's "Brides & Grooms" for many of the counties in England some of whom are no doubt related to American Wynne's. In the last few messages I note references to "The Complete Book of Emigrants" by Peter Wilson Coldham. I do not believe Peter W. Coldham has compiled what can be regarded as a "complete book of emigrants" as there are at least four other books dealing with emigrants for the same period not otherwise covered in Coldhams original book. Also, since his first publication on the subject Coldham has been adding to his original work and new English port book records continue to be discovered followed by new publications of emigrants. Here I would add it is virtually impossible for a male in direct bloodline descent from Sir John Wynn of Gwydir to have ever immigrated to the colonies. Though, interestingly Sir Owen Wynn did for a time have a custodial responsibility in Virginia, there is no proof he ever came to Virginia or as they say 'lived, married and left issue'. -Robert -----Original Message----- From: winn-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:winn-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ROBERT CAPPS Sent: Thursday, November 19, 2009 3:41 PM To: winn@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WINN] A Gwynne/Winn Situation for Myles Myles, I just wish that you would get everything you have an publish it. Hi Marilyn, Thanks for the compliment of thinking that I am a fount of Wynne info. In fact, Larry (Robert Wynne) is right: he is the one who has searched relentlessly for some 15 yrs now and become the go-to-guy for in-depth research on Wynnes. I do keep score on the Wynne desc. of John Wynne of York co. (d. 1772) and have kept tabs on these other Wynne line is Va. mainly to be able to keep the various desc. lines clear. I have not tried to document other lines than my own but keep hoping that some of these other Va. Winn/Wynne lines will take the time to produce good, updated, documented accounts of their lines. The Robert Wynne of Canterbury, Eng., and Charles City Co., Va., is pretty well known but even that line could use a good, updated written account. The Minor Winn line is, I think, unnecessarily confused and surely could use a good. Clear account. Ditto Richard Winn of Middlesex co. And Hugh Gwynn of Gwynn's Is. & Gloucester co. has never had a good account written about his line. And the account I wrote on John Wynne's line is now over 20 yrs. Old and badly needs updating with the corrections and additions that Frederick Boelt has compiled in those 20+ yrs. I've kept waiting in hopes we would solve the John Wynne ancestry problem. The different versions of the descendant lines seem to be what is causing confusion in the interpretation of DNA results, so getting their stories straight would be a great service.
