    1. [WINN] GERRARDS et al
    2. Aloha kakahiaka! (Good morning) from Kailua, Hawai'i. Found the info below on the FamilyHistory.com Message Board during my "morning surf". Does any of it look familiar and do you know if any of it appears in a substantiated form somewhere? "Andie" Harris   FamilyHistory.com Message Boards  Viewing records 1-2 of 2 Matches        Submitter: Paul Wester Gerrard Subject: Gerrard Message: Archibald's Father - Samuel Gerrard, Mother Sydney Gerrard Castlecomer Archibald's Grandfather - Archibald Webster Gerrard (New York.) Possible links back to Dr Thomas Gerrard, Col. John Washington's (George Washington ancestor)Neighbor. Frances Gerrard was one of Col. John Washington's wives. In Westmoreland there is recorded a marriage contract betwen Col. John Washington and Frances Appleton, widow of Capt. John Appleton (nee Frances Gerrard), dated 10 May, 1676. Dr. Thomas Gerrard's first wife, Susanna, was the daughter of Justinian Snow, one of the founders of Maryland and Lord Baltimore's factor in the Indian trade. Abel Snow, a clerk in the chancery office, London, and Marmaduke Snow, were two other brothers(34). Dr. Gerrard was for a long time councillor, but was finally banished from Maryland for taking part in the insurrection of Josias Fendall in 1659. This line of Gerrards came from Sir Thomas Gerrard - ultimately of the Plantagenets - being descendents of Gerald Fitzgerald who shared the favours of Nest Tewdyyr Princess of South Wales with Henry 1st of England (William the Conquerres son). Gerald's son Fitzgerald was also the first Fiztgerald to enter Ireland. He invaded Ireland in 1100 (as Maurice the Invader)and became the ruling lord in Leinster (the current province - where lies Castlecomer, Meath and Dublin - in which many Gerrard clans are clustered). His descendants ruled Leinster for the next 400 years. The two lines converged again when Sidney Gerrard married Baron John Wynne of Wales - of the Molyneux/Gerrard line. One of the more recent and notable Fitzgeralds was President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Many of the forbears of Gerald ruled in many of the European Kingdoms and principalities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Submitter: Joe Breeze Subject: GWYNN: Wales to Mathews Co., VA Message: Hi Gwynn researchers- Does anyone have reliable information to bridge the Atlantic? Most the following information appears in Thomas Felix Hickerson?s book "Happy Valley" published by the author in Chapel Hill, NC in 1940. Some information is from History of the Gwydir Family by Sir John Wynn, written after 1580 (1990, Gomer Press), and History of the Gwin Family, by Jesse Blain Gwin, 1961, self-published. -Joe Breeze -3. Meredith Wynne of Y Gesail Gyfarch and Gwydir (d. March 1525) m. Alice, dau. William Gruffudd (spelling in Welsh). Meredith was the first to use the last name "Wynne" or "Wyn." Hickerson says it was Morris (-1) who adopted the name, though a brother was John "Gwyn." -2. John Wynne of Gwydir (d. July 9, 1559) m. Elin, dau. Morus ap John of Clennau (sp., Welsh) -1. Representative for London Company. Possibly granted Gwyn Island by James I. Note: It is sketchy just who the father of the Col. Hugh Gwyn below is. 3. Hugh (Col.) Gwyn (1618-1699) m. Elizabeth (or Ann?) Fielding. Of Milford Haven, Wales. Obtained land grant of Gwynn?s Island and 6000 acres on the Potomac River. 4. John (Rev.; rector 1672-1680) Gwyn (1650-??) m. ??? 5. Both were born in Gwyn Island, old Gloucester Co., VA; they possibly lived a few years in Pittsylvania Co., VA, then in 1775 moved to the Yadkin Valley, Wilkes Co., NC and settled at "Green Hill". He died at "Green Hill", Ronda, NC, after contracting malaria in SC. Sarah Ransome later married Col. Thomas Lenoir (no issue?). Children of Richard Gwyn and Sarah Ransome were: 7i. 3. Hi Andie and any others who might swallow the appended Wynn genealogy: The Wynn genealogy appended by Joe Breeze and taken from the several sources listed is not valid. The error is that Owen Wynne did NOT come to Va. and did NOT have any children who did. Any and all Wynn/Wynne/Winn/Gwynns who came to Va were NOT descendants of Sir John Wynne. The parentage and ancestry of Hugh Gwynn, who DID come to Va., has never been proved, tho he undoubtedly was a part of the large extended group of Wynns in Wales of that time. Research efforts should be directed toward finding his ancestry. Va. patent records clearly show he was the patentee of the property that became known as Gwynn's Island. That said, the Gerrard family info given is very interesting and the first I have seen on her. Many thanks for that. But please don't perpetuate the myth about Owen Wynne coming to Va.
