It sounds as if Francis Jay Winn, Sr. died after 1912. Death Certificates were required in NC beginning in 1913. Few people complied in the early years, but it's worth a shot to try to find one in Alamance County for Francis, Sr. It it's there, it should name his parents and actual birth date.
