My source for the Rev. John Gwynn was cited from p. 23 of "The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina" by the Rev. Frederick Lewis Weis, Th.D., Boston, MA, pub. 1955. He states " John Gwinn (or Gwynn), matric. New Hall Inn, Oxford 25 Mar. 1659; sett. Ware Parish (Gloucester) Va., 1672-1674 sett. Abdingdon Par. (Gloucester) Va., 1674-1688; Ep. I have been trying along with my cousins for years to find our John Wynne of York Co., VA emigrant so far without sucess and in the process have acquired a fair amount of material on other Tidewater Virginia Wynnes. Curiously the pedigree sheets at the back of "Carter's Grove Plantation - A History" by Mary Stephenson published by Colonial Williamsburg take our line of Wynne to my grandfather. They begin our line taken one generation earlier than our earliest known ancestor John Wynne of York Co., VA begun with the name John Gwyn followed by a ? which inevitably leads everyone incorrectly to the Rev. John Gwyn of Abingdon Parish. If the citation from Weis is correct then the Rev. John Gwyn would not have been in Virginia prior to 1660 at the earliest given his schooling at Oxford in March of 1659 he would have barely had a chance to have been in VA for days in 1659 without having any experience as a rector in England prior to his emigration. He would also not have had any parents from Virginia as recruits were taken from the motherland and from fairly established families. I have not had a chance to look at the New Hall Inn, Oxford record to see if a record of Gwyn's first parish appointment was made. However, Lambeth Palace the court of the Bishop of London, who had at that time sole responsibilty to appoint rectors in Virginia contains any information on this Rev. John Gwyn is another possible source authority. Curious that Weis allowed both spellings - Gwinn/Gwynn - I've not seen any 17th C document that carries the alternate spelling Gwin(n).
