Author: stephwm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/219.220.221.222.293.1.5.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The genealogies of several Winn families of Lunenburg Co. VA were confused by earlier researchers whose errors were later published, and those errors have been repeated many times over the years. The earlier misconceptions have been cleared with the 2009 publication of Winn - Daniel and His Nine Sons, 2nd Edition, Martin Warner Winn Et al. Meticulous research by the authors has sorted the three Thomas Winns and four John Winns who lived in Lunenburg during the mid to late 1700s. Much of the confusion was due to the multiplicity of the names "Thomas" and "John," and the fact that all lived within a small geographical area of Lunenburg County. In the above-mentioned publication, each of these individuals has now been identified and placed within the proper family grouping with proofs cited & obtained through careful study and analysis of Lunenburg county deed, will & tithe records. The Thomas Winn who died with will dated 31 Oct. 1796 and probated 1797 in South Carolina was the son of Col. Thomas Winn Sr. who died with will dated 18 Sept. 1779 and probated in Lunenburg Co. VA in 1781. The Thomas Winn who married Joyce Ferguson was the son of Daniel Winn of Lunenburg Co. VA. Col. Thomas Winn Sr. & Daniel Winn were contemporaries who arrived in Lunenburg within ten years of one another. Thomas moved to Lunenburg from Hanover Co. VA c1746, and Daniel moved to Lunenburg from Prince George Co. VA c1754. Both had families with children when they came. Early Lunenburg deeds of both men used the "Wynne" spelling of the name. Parentage has not been proven for either man, and there is (as yet) no known blood connection between the two. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
