This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Winn, Wynn, Scarborough Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FgWBAEB/717.1 Message Board Post: Rachel - I don't know if this will help or not, but I toss it out for what it's worth. My husband's GGGaunt, Margaret Elizabeth (Maggie) Wynn (9 Sep 1830 - 3 Apr 1860) married Josiah F. Scarborough 8 Nov 1840 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, LA. Her family lived in Richland Parish near Crew Lake/Start. Aunt Maggie is buried at the Old Bethel Cemetery at Hagewood (which is halfway between Robeline & Natchitoches). Might be a connection there somehow. At any rate, I've looked some for you & here's what I've found (this is assuming that Ruth's family was in Natchitoches Parish for a good while prior to her birth): There's an Irvin H. Winn listed as living in Robeline on the 1920 Natchitoches Parish census (Page 1a ED#47 image 1 of 10). He's the only white Winn listed in Robeline; the other was (I think) a black female. Says he was born in LA , his father was born in NC, and his mother was born in SC. He's in 11/15 aged 61 (b 1858) with wife Mollie aged 56 living in 11/14 the house of Leroy E Burton 31 and wife Ethel 25 (possibly the daughter of Irvin H & Mollie). Interestingly, it says that Irvin owns his house & Leroy just rents. The Louisiana Statewide Death Index, 1900-49 @ Ancestry.com shows that Irvin H Winn died 23 Jun 1923 at the age of 65 in Natchitoches Parish, LA Checking the LA Census, 1810-90 for Natchitoches Parish there are none with the spelling of Wynn (ran that just in case), but there are Winn spellings. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?f3=&f2=winn&f4=natchitoches&f7=&sx=f2&db=lacen&ti=0 There are 3 Winns listed in 1840, 2 in 1850, 5 in 1860 & 6 in 1870. Ran quickly to the LDS site and found what I think is his family in 1880: Margaret Winn Self Widow Female W 55 SC Farmer NC SC Irwin Winn Son Single Male W 21 LA Works in Farm SC SC Elizabeth Winn SDau Single Female W 26 LA SC SC Ella Winn Dau Single Female W 19 LA SC SC Nella Winn Dau - Female W 16 LA SC SC Nanni Winn Dau Single Female W 13 LA SC SC Census place: 6th Ward, Natchitoches Parish, LA page number 635C So I'd guess that Margaret (at least the 2nd wife) married Irwin & Elizabeth's father sometime between 1855 and 1858. I'd check the 1860 census for Margaret & Elizabeth. Looked at cemeteries that said they were located near Robeline & I've found Winns buried in Rocky Mount, but Irvin H (Irving H) is buried at Central Cemetery in Robeline: http://www.rootsweb.com/~lanatchi/central.htm WINN, Irving H. ( Feb 12, 1860 / June 23, 1923 ) There are a number of other Winns also buried there, among them Richard M Winn (4 May 1813 - 2 Apr 1880). Says it's a double marker with Margaret A Winn, so this is likely Irvin's father since Margaret shows as a widow on the previously mentioned 1880 census. Have you gotten in touch with anyone at the Natchitoches Parish site? Their surname list shows 3 researchers for Winn from 1861 forward. Hope this has been helpful. Lisa
