Author: rlwynne_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1661.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Robert Wynne was Mayor of Canterbury ca 1594 and a woolendraper. His grandson Col. Robert Wynne was the emigrant to Virginia and the Speaker of the House of Burgesses during the "Long Parliament" under Sir William Bekelely. There is quite a diference between being a woolendraper in Canterbury and holding the position of Draper to Elizabeth I in London. The Berkeley's mentioned in the line of George Wynne whose son married Mary Berkeley are distant relations to one another. John Gwyn for many years. I think it's well if the surnames Winn, Gwyn and Wynne do not get comingled in this line as they have in the subject line and text body of your message. Every citation I have seen for this Rev. John Gwyn spells his name with a preceding /G/. This Rev. John Gwyn would have been appointed by the Bishop of London after serving a period as a rector in England preceded by at least 4-5 years of schooling. If I recall correctly this John Gwyn went to Oxford to receive his D.D. prior to his departure to Virginia as rector of Abingdon Parish. The court document you cite is as you say unrelated to the Rev. John Gwyn and may be related to the several [perhaps two lines] of Wynne residing in York, Warwick and James City Co.'s contemporaneously during this period none of whom are related to Col Robert Wynne and his line - they are thought to have emigrated to Virginia prior to Col. Robert Wynne. The ancestor's of the several Wynne lines precede the Rev. John Gwyn arrival in Virginia by at least 20-30 years. Author: rlwynne_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1661.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have researched this line for the last 10 years. This line is represented today by the Baron St. Oswald who resides at Nostell Priory, West Riding Yorkshire. Edmund Wynne and his father George Wynne, Draper to Elizabeth I was among the first 72 persons in 1619 to receive a land patent [a "particular plantation" of 500 acres in Virginia for having transported a multitude of persons and cattle to Virginia. There is no indication where the particular plantation was located but it was likely situated along with other London merchant who formed Martin's Hundred. George Wynne died in 1610 and Edmund carried on the family business in London as both were members of the Merchant Taylor's Guild. Edmund's son and George's grandson was granted a Baronetcy in 1660 one of the first after Charles II regained the throne. He was a member of the Mercer's Guild. There is no idication that any of these Wynne's "lived, Married or had issue in Virginia as they were at the top of the social stra! ta in England had no reason to pull up stakes and remove to VA. Though I would leave some room for an emigrant in this line to have left England during the interregnum. The visitations give a fair account of this line but the County History of Yorkshire expands the collateral to a greater degree. - Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [WINN] Fermantle reference
    2. Larry could not post to the list so I am feeding this through Connie Robert L. Wynne [mailto:rlwynne@astound.net] Randy- Dennis Ray Wynn’s reference to J. Rives Childs article appearing in the VA Mag. of Hist. & Bio. has been completely researched and disproved. Childs was working on the assumption that the claim by Richard Wynne of Montgomeryshire and London – a very wealthy Shrewsbury woolendraper – to the arms of Gwydir and descent from Sir John Wynn of Gwydir was correct. The College of Arms had to redact Richard Wynne’s claim sometime after publication in “The Wynne Diaries” by Anne Fremantle that the claimed pedigree of this line of Wynne was disproved. That said I await confirmation one way or the other by way of Y DNA testing whether it is possible that Thomas Wynne who is known to have “lived in Virginia, married and had issue” [per a 17th C visitation] has a Y DNA match to persons bearing the Wynne surname in the US/Virginia and further may match descendants of the Royal tribe of Owain Gwynedd. Our VA line continues well nested in the Welsh Patronymics d base and is further confirmed by a positive L 21 SNP match to early Celtic Welsh DNA. Exactly how our L 21 SNP is connected to the early Welsh remains to be proven. It is theoretically possible that the claim by Richard Wynne to the arms of Gwydir is one made as a descendant to a common patriarch several generations earlier than the date when the Gwydir Wynne’s assumed the surname Wynne. For example it may be possible that both the Gwydir Wynne’s and Richard Wynne’s lineage derives from a common descent to Owain Gwynedd. This would allow for a relationship between the two families and accommodate the dis allowance of the right to bear arms by the College. I have copies of the original documents from Richard Wynne who made the claim as a funeral achievement in connection with his daughter who married Sir Abraham Reynardson, sometimes Lord Mayor of London. In this line is the famous Giustiniana Wynne whose marriage ruined the career of her husband as ambassador to the Austrian court in Venice as she could not provide her arms to accompany her husband’s in 12 quarters. In those days it was a pre requisite that both husband and wife have the right to bear arms to at least 32 quarterings in order to be heard at court. This situation is recounted on p. 312 of the “Wynne Diaries” in which Giustinian’s plea for a confirmation of arms was personally disallowed by none other than King George III though some of the family continued to perpetuate the myth of a relationship to Gwydir. This line of Richard Wynne is now maternally distincted in the line of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (see web site for the title and pedigree). Subsequent enquiries about this situation to the College of Arms in London confirm all of the above. This message can be forwarded to DRW if you like. Best Larry

    2. Hi everyone I am hoping maybe Robert will answer this one. February is the month I am SWAMPED!!! The Winn Diaries have an erroneous chart in the front. I do not know of any direct male lines from Gwidar. Certainly non in colonies. My line is from Dr. Thomas Wynne PA/DE and we are a cousin line to Gwidar through a female line. I think I can speak for most of you when I say that the thought is the other Wynne/Winn/Wynns lines are cousin via other lines yet undefined possibly to each other and to Gwidar. Connie

    1. Re: [WINN] Looking for info on William J. Winn, SC
    2. D.R. Wynn
    3. Dear Randy,          On your home page you state "The direct line of descendency from the Welch noblemen of Gwynedd and Gwydir through 1000 years of history to our Wynns and Winns of Virginia is a myth."           I thought that proof that there were no Wynn Gwydir descendants  in America was fairly well established until I read the article by J. Rives Childs published in The Virginia Magazine Of History And Biography, October 1964, Vol. 72, No. 4 titled The Wynne Family Of Gwydir And Virginia.                      Apparently there was a Gwydir Wynn descendant who did make it to Virginia.          I extracted the information in the article into a gene style chart for visability comprehension.          Thomas Wynns b. abt. 1626, d. 1662 at sea is the one who came to Virginia. This Thomas is the son of another Thomas Wynns 1604-1644 and I don't know who his wife was yet. I may yet find out as I'm also extracting information from the "Wynne Diaries" and "Casanova Loved Her by Bruno Brunelli 1929" as all these Wynns are closely related. I digress.          The Thomas Wynns 1604-1644 is the son of Alice Spurtow and Richard Wynns who was a brother to Sir John Wynns of Gwydir b.1553, Baronet 1611, his lineage extinct.                     The big question is, could this Thomas Wynns 1626-1662 have left any decendants in Virginia? The time frame allows that he could have and genealogy dictates he should have. That could have, should have is buried in question marks. There is no information yet found that he married much less any indication he had any children.          Childs did some research and speculated that the only canidate he found for a son of Thomas in Virginia was one Jasper Wynns b.1652. I'm assuming Childs found the time frame right, the geography right and this Jasper otherwise unaccounted for. Childs made some suggestions for further research.          In trying to find something about this Jasper I got a reply from a posting about a Jasper Wynns who was Mullato. I think the Jasper she referred to was one in the 1800's. She was away from home and I got the impression I would get more information after she was home but haven't heard yet. Mullato Jasper Wynns in the 1800's would not disinterest me in the Jasper of 1652.          Childs also speculates on the possability that this Thomas Wynns who came to Virginia might be a cousin to the well know Robert Wynne 1626-1678 emigrant to Virginia.          It may be a bit early to close the book on the Gwydir descent in Virginia myth.          Got a posting you did on William Winn and knew I had information on this family in the WFKA (Wynne Family And Kinsmen Association, Inc.) records collected many years ago. Don't know that I'd have anything you don't allready have but what are you looking for??          Went to your page, nice job, and got sidetracked on this Gwydir thing.          I once spent the night at the Gwydir Castle.
