    1. [WINN] WINN Family in Arlington, MA, for many generations
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Winn, Hutchinson, Crosby Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1673/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, People currently living in Arlington, MA, are interested in the WINN family which lived in that town for many generations. It was a "market farm" family probably begun in the 1800's. I do not have a WINN on my family-tree that I know of. * So, I am just curious if anyone has researched that family. And, I'm also curious who the WINN patriarch was - for MA. If you are interested in this family, you might like to know that the Arlington Historical Society has a set of "diaries" written by Nina WINN from ~1900. Betty (near Lowell, MA) * I have been researching my HUTCHINSON and CROSBY ancestors for 20 years. My great-grandmother's relatives started the research, so I had information to start with. There was a very large HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester, MA. (When that farm start in 1720's the land was still part of Charlestown, and then was part of Woburn, before becoming Winchester ~1850. Approx. 1840, my ancestors, Jacob and Eliza (CROSBY) HUTCHINSON, lived on the farm. And, Eliza's younger brother, John CROSBY, had the large "market farm" down the street - in Arlington, MA. (Arlington was "West Cambridge" until late 1800's.) John CROSBY was one of the neighbors of George WINN. Their farms were near each other. (The HUTCHINSON Farm was at the top of the hill on Hutchinson Road (Winchester / Woburn) and the CROSBY Farm was at the bottom of that hill (Arlington / West Cambridge). (No one has ever written a book on the HUTCHINSON patriarchs, brothers, George and Thomas, and their descendants. So, I don't know if there was a WINN spouse among their descendants. George and Thomas had arrived in 1630 with "the Winthrop Fleet.") Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. My letter to Randy Smart -- Can anyone out there help me make a connection to "Minor Winn"???? so far I have been unable to connect to any Minor Winn.  This is the information that I do know; grandfather - Warner Albert Winn - 2 Feb 1886 in , Montgomery, Tennessee, USA , d. 30 Jan 1955, Davidson Co., TN                        (Sarah Lucille Powell) ggrandfather - Hiram Lewis Winn - 23 Oct 1855 in Montgomery Co., TN , d. 8 Apr 1886, Montgomery Co., TN                          (Caroline Elizabeth McGowan)  gggrandfather - Thomas Jefferson Winn - 24 Nov 1821 Sumner, Tennessee, d. 30 Mar 1910, Montgomery Co., TN                             (Rachel Carney Lewis) ggggrandfather - Richard M. Winn 19 Feb 1797 , Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, d. 9 Apr 1873, Montgomery Co., TN                               (Ann Nancy "Nannie" Wilks) gggggrandfather - Mourning Winn - 07 May 1767, Virginia (I believe Lunenburg Co.), d. 27 Feb 1816, Sumner Co., TN                                 (Sarah Nancy Jones) Is there a connection in Virginia, and where is that connection?  I do have more information but apparently the geneaologist that tracked our information made an error somewhere along the way.  I do show cousins with the name Minor, but I have been unable to connect my line with a Minor Winn.  I did buy the book called Daniel Winn and his nine sons, and they hint toward the Winns that settled in Sumner Co., but there is no actual connection.  Can you help me? You will find them linked on Minor's Page: http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn/WinnJamesMinor.htm Children: Thomas - Lucinda - James - Bettie - Sarah I suspect that your Thomas Jeffereson Winn is the son of Ely/Eli and Matilda (nee McNight) Winn. I have no sources to confirm or deny this. That's all I can find in the marriage, birth, death indexes for Washington county. You are already looking at the Census records. You might try the obits via the Fayettevile Library/Cheri Coley. They didn't keep much on births and deaths. The cemetery records are accessible via the cemeteries websites. 3. Pictures of Rock Hill house in Virginia are here: http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn/RockHillVirginia.htm The Thomas Jefferson Winn family hasn't been tied into this site (yet). His grave is pictured at: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=winn&GSiman=1&GScid=56611&GRid=24400929& I believe the first Winn in Washington County, Arkansas was James Winn. When about 18 years old, he moved from Tennessee to Illinois, then to a farm near West Fork, Washington county, Arkansas with his family in 1832. MS 7 James married Pernetty Bloyed, daughter of the first settler, Eli Bloyed. James's father was from SC but it is believed they stopped and lived in at least one place in Tennessee before settling on Arkansas, where they stayed. Randy C. The 1930 part after reading through it deals with the Minor Winn's I, II, III & IV and all their families and their wills. I couldn't find any connection that would connect them to my grandma's side. the 1980 section just dealt with Thomas Jefferson Winn and forward with his kids and their families and on. Author: rsmart197 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1671.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You are certainly not alone in your quest to sort out the Arkansas Winn family. I have come to believe that most of the earlier genealogy of our Winn families is wrong or, at minimum, not verfied or documented satisfactorily. I now source everything I can and take the rest with a grain of salt. With the help of others, I am attempting to document sources as they are re-reviewed in order to allow researchers to put this information into it's proper context, correct errors and document our lines. In this way only, can we ever sort them out properly, given all the miss-information existing. This process is ongoing but we are making significant headway lately working back in hisotry towards Virginia and the Winn beginnings in America in the early 1700s. Cheri Coley can be reached via e-mail at dckcoley@sbcglobal.net and has been cc'ed on earlier messages to you. She is a distant cousin and is intimately involved with past and present Winn family research in Washington County. I am in the process of delinating our line, re-verifying connections and documenting the results on this site: http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn You'll find a lot of the source material I've been furnished, linked there in a mannor that should help in your research where it overlaps ours. Cheri should be able to fill in from there. Here fees are very reasonalbe and her help invaluable if you are crystal clear about what you have and what you are after. I assume that the Winns of Washington County Arkansas are related but those relationships need to be verified and documented. The Minor Winn page may be the best place to start for research of Arkansas Winns. The Winn Vamily History site is an attempt to sort out our family and I have attempted to explain the actual realtionship with earlier families with similar names and confused histories. For more on this, you should read this page: http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn/index.htm If you find addional ties, applicable sources, or conflicting information, I would be interested in looking into it. Whats the best way to get a hold of Chery Coley? I got a 20 document from my Grandmother about the genealogy of the winn family that was compiled by a Mary Elizabeth Cooper Winn done in June 1930 with a supplement done in August 1980 by the family of Thomas Jefferson Winn. The 1930 part after reading through it deals with the Minor Winn's I, II, III & IV and all their families and their wills. I couldn't find any connection that would connect them to my grandma's side. the 1980 section just dealt with Thomas Jefferson Winn and forward with his kids and their families and on. I have searched all over the interenet and various geneology web sites for information about his parent's but I've gotten nowhere.
