    1. [WINN] OFF TOPIC: Census Taker
    2. The Thill Group Inc
    3. CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. 3. Dear Cuz's we have a cuz on here that has been on since September and is wanting to connect with someone that may have people in her line or from her area, so if you have some impute then speak up!!! Her name is Phyllis Phillips pphillips3@kc.rr.com This is her message to me: I have Wynn/Wynne ancestry and have been watching closely for a tie-in to ours. I am still pretty new at this, started in September. I have, so far, found my gr gr grandfather, Robert Joshana Wynn, born in Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1842. The next time I know for certain where he was he volunteered for the Civil War at age 19 in Doniphan County, Kansas. He was wounded in the war and discharged. He married Nancy Emeline Masters in Doniphan County, Kansas then they moved to Osage County, Kansas. He died there at the age of 29. He and Nancy had three children: Frances Marion, Viola Emeline, and William Washington (my gr grandfather). He is buried by Robert Hughes Wynne (maybe his cousin), who was also born in Indiana. Robert H.'s father was Joshua William Wynne, born in Kentucky. I was able to get a death certificate for Robert Hughes Wynne, but not for Robert J. (Kansas only has death certs for years after 1911) Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? And, yes, I want to know more about the group! Thanks, Phyllis Phillips pphillips3@kc.rr.com Everyone sound out!!! Cuz B ttg-inc@attbi.com http://www.ttg-inc.net http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ttg13/

    3. Dear List Members, I am new to this list and to Geneology research. I am joining my mother's efforts of the last eight years. These are the surnames found in the Hibler Cemetery in Missouri: HIBLER, JONES, SNELSON. We are Jones. The families were all related but we are not sure how yet. It was (and still is) a private family cemetery, although new graves are not being added that I am aware of. On our initial visits to the cemetery we were not aware that these families were all related. We failed to collect important infomration at that time. However we are going to return this summer and take photos of every grave and copy all the available data from local records. In the mean time, does anyone have any information of Ferguson McDonald Jones (Ferguson Mack Donald Jones) who left PA and arrived in Missouri sometime before 1866 when his son Henry S. Jones was born. If anyone has information or needs information, please email. 3. Below find Roy's second e-mail with lots of history and info!! Again welcome Roy to our group. Cuz Becky ttg-inc@attbi.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Roy Sent: Sunday, December 15, 2002 11:03 PM Subject: Gwynn Wynne etc...? Hi Becky, Speedy return, Thankyou. You can put me down for both ...I can always change later. Right now all I wish is to somehow tie in with the American Wynne/Gwynn genealogy. I have read the book called ''The House of Gwydir ' , Have you read it?. It is one of the explanations of the various Gwynn / Wynne spellings. Apparently the lord of the house of Gwydir married and had some kids and they were surnamed Gwynn....after several years his wife died and he married his cousin....the resulting children were named Wynne. Hense...the difference in name... I do not know how authentic this book is but supplies one answer. Another article I have read is the name Gwynn and where it originated. Apparently in the long ago when France and England were at war there were a group of Flemish ''Flanders' who were being persecuted by the ruling party. They fled to England with the understanding that they were to gaurd the welsh coast from France. Hense the groupings of the surname Gwynn / Wynne along the Aberystwyth coast past Cardigan and onto St Davids and into Carmathon. The people who came as immigrants were white skinned with blue eyes and became known as the fair people or GWYNN / WYNNE. Another great tale but not ever proved. It is my beleif that many Babtist and Quaker welsh fled from the mid and eastern areas of wales and into Penn. and other areas. I live in Canada where my father immigrated in 1928. His genealogy goes back 9 generations to a Daniel Gwynn of llandissiloo Wales into London , Birmingham , Malvern and Canada. I have the wills for all generations except one family and of course...Daniel of llandissilio. In Penn there should be records of Immigrants and where they lived. Any info on this? The name Gwynn as in Tony Gwynn ... the ball player...was supposed to have been from a slave family somewhere on Gwynns Island. When the slaves were freed the people merely took the last name of the owners...another not easily proven statement but interesting. Yes put me on both lists. Maybe somewhere someone will fit the square hole or maybe I,ll fit their round one. thanks, Roy Gwynn

    1. [WINN] Report on John Winn
    2. Myles Johnson
    3. Hi All, The following is my summary of recent research in Westmoreland Co. & the LVA on this man. John Winn of Westmoreland Co.,Va. My goal here was to see what Westmoreland co. records do exist for John Winn, his alleged marriage to Elizabeth Minor, and for any children. The records on "John Winn" are meager. At Montross, the county seat of Westmoreland, the Westmld.Hist.Soc. has a little museum and an excellent research library, just across from the CH. This county has a continuous series of Order Books from 1653, as well as Wills, etc. 1657 - 'Jno. Winn' is one of 40 headrights claimed by Robert Vaulx, Merchant, for 2000 ac. of land in Westmoreland co. [Nugent, Cavaliers & Pioneers, v.1:366]. >From Order Books 1653-1721, transcribed by John F. Dorman: 1669 - John Winn is a witness for the sale of patent of George & Eliz. Richmond to Thomas Barrett. [Deeds & Pat. 1665-1677, Pt. 1:78]. 1670 - "Mr. Winn" is on a list of men whose debts were not paid to Mr. Henry Brett. [Ibid, Pt. II:5]. 1718 - John Winn, with others, is ordered to answer charges made by the Grand Jury. [Apparently for failing to attend church or otherwise offending some propriety]. [Order Bk 1705-1721, Pt. VII:74,77}. That's it. Dorman's series of transcriptions end in 1721 and doubtless more data could be gleaned from the later books available in the CH. These items seem to refer to the same man from 1657 to 1670 but the gap to 1718 seems to great to be the same man. Possible but unlikely. The almost complete absence of entries reflecting any service - ie.: on juries and involvement in court suits - suggests he was a small farmer. There is no will or estate administration; no marriage bond; no sign (except the 1718 item) of children. Many accounts of John Winn say he died in 1694. There is no sign of what this is based on but is not unreasonable, if he truly arrived in Virginia in 1657 or a few years before. There was no sign of a parish register or vestry book for Cople parish but the LVA does have a history publ. 1999 which I have not seen. But this John Winn surely could not have married Elizabeth Minor, the youngest daughter of John Minor (1652-1698). John Minor was a prominent and wealthy land-owner, tavern keeper, and public official (Under-sheriff; Jailor). Many record entries reflect his involvement with the largest land-owners. His will [Deeds & Wills No.2, p. 182] was written on 30 March 1698 and probated on 22 Feb. 1699. He names four children; Elizabeth Minor, the youngest, receives 200 ac "next adjacent to her sister Frances Minor's land". Her mother, "Ellenor" married again right away, in 1700, usually a sign that she had children to care for and no married child to live with. Nicholas Minor, John Minor's eldest, does not appear in county records until 1708 but is cited frequently thereafter. My estimate is that John & Ellenor Minor married abt. 1670-80, and that Elizabeth, the fourth, was born in the 1680's. Even if John Winn did not die in 1694, it is most unlikely for him to have become the husband of Elizabeth Minor. Age, social status, a total absence of any record of marriage --- nothing supports the idea. Many have cited William Avery Miner's " Descendants of John Minor" who traces both the Minor and Winn lines, beginning with this alleged marriage. But probably few have noted that Miner clearly states "Thus far there is no documentary proof of this marriage, but it is believed to be correct since John Winn is known to have married an Elizabeth Minor in Westmoreland county, Va., at that time". [Miner 1983, p.1]. Later, buried at the end among other sources is a note that he got much of the information about this marriage and its descendants from Dennis R. Wynn as FGS's for which "Sources of data are not given …" and the reader is referred to Mr. Wynn for any questions. 'Nuff said. The most likely propagator of this alleged marriage and a set of children is the well-intentioned but confused Dr. W.W. Smith, who is given as a source of this info by Dean F. Winn in his "Notes on the Winn Family …" (ca.1953), p.13. Dean Winn elected to start his account with Minor Winn as the first for whom a documentary record could be found. Good idea. Dennis Wynn sent me a xerox copy of Dean Winn's book. So the circle is complete. I'll be happy to discuss any aspect of this. Myles Johnson

    3. Dear R Harris, My Grandfather Coel Albert Winn was married in Franklin, Robertson Co., Texas to Cora Belle Phillips. Does any of this ring a bell? I know very little about my grandmother, but have what I know on the Winn lists. I do not know anything about Manerva Winn or John Wesley Woods. I have a daughter that lives in Franklin now, so maybe she could do some research for you if necessary. Linette Huntsman bhntsmn@ipa.net

    2. Hello list, I am seeking any information on the marriage of a MINERVA WINN b AL. & JOHN WESLEY WOODS in Robertson County, TX, as well as any with knowledge of the WINN'S in Robertson County, TX.. This marriage took place, shortly after the death of his wife Caroline Jackson Woods in 1885-86. They had a daughter, Arthur Woods b1888 in Headville, TX & d in Tarrant County in 1976. John Woods died in 1891. MINERVA WINN is found on the 1920 census in the Willow Creek area of Robertson County living with her daughter. She had remarried a gentleman with last name of JACQUES & apparently was again widowed or divorced. RHarris

    1. [WINN] Court Records for Minor Winn
    2. DEANNA AMES
    3. Myles and All, Myles, I am looking forward to receiving the info that you are going to provide for Winn Maillist concerning John Winn & Elizabeth Minor. I felt that you and others might be interested in the following court records for Minor and Margaret Conner Winn. These records are of interest as the court records provide proof that Minor Winn "himself" left a record of which county he was residing: (1) Minor Winn lived in Orange Co. VA by 1737, (2) Culpeper Co VA by 1748 when Culpeper Co. was formed from Orange Co., (3) Prince William Co VA by 1760 and (4) Fauquier Co VA by1769. Minor Winn states in each record where he was living at the date of the court record. The court records, also, prove that the 202 acres on Potato Run started in Orange Co VA in 1737 and were in Culpeper Co VA in 1770; however, Culpeper was formed from Orange Co. by 1748 so the 202 a. were really in Culpeper by 1748. Also, the 202 a. on Potato Run is the first land deed that I have found for Minor Winn. A researcher can prove that the children of Minor Winn born between 1737-1748 were born in Orange Co VA and after 1748 until abt. 1760 were born in Culpeper Co VA. When was the last child of Minor and Margaret Conner Winn born? 2. Do you have a copy of George Wynns will? I found this on the internet. Will of George Wynns dated 02 Feb 1750/51, probated May Court 1751 Bertie Co, NC - in NC Archives, Wills 1663-1789, Vol XXXV, p 65-66> Names of this family taken from transcribed copy of this will except for last name of wife, Rose Bush (see Will of William Bush). Witnesses: John Baker, Jno. Harrell, Thos. Lee, Jas. He is mentioned as Captain George Wynne in 1727; from 1731 to 1737 he represented Bertie Co in the Colonial General Assembly. "Heritage of Bertie Co NC" p 659: Capt George Wynns of Bertie Co was elected a member of the NC Assembly on 13 Apr 1731 from Precinct of Bertie. He died before May Court of 1751. To him and his wife Rose were born 7 children: John Wynns, Benjamin Wynns, Joseph Wynns, William Wynns, George Wynns (these are the only 5 listed). "NC Wills: A Testator Index 1665-1900 v. 1 & 2" by Thornton W. Mitchel: George Wynns, Bertie Co, 1751, recorded copy in Sec of State Archives, shelf # 879, p 18; original in Sec of State Loose Wills in State Archives. The Martin County, NC Wynnes have been traced back to the early 1700's in this area of NC. The family name was evidently Wynns at that time. Captain George Wynns of Bertie County was elected a member of the N.C. Assembly on April 13, 1732 from Precinct of Bertie. The "s" appears to have been dropped in the early 1800's and as I understand it, the "e" was added to help the local Agriculture office better keep track of the records of the farming records of the Wynn's in the county. There is a reference to a pair of brothers going back to England prior to the civil war to retrieve family members but they were never heard from again. That is the only hint given as to where this family originated. According to my father, there were Wynnes that traveled back to NC from Missouri to visit family here but he does not remember anymore about them. If anyone had more information to help me with I would very much appreciate it. Thanks, George outfiter@williamstonnc.com

    3. Peggy Davis of the WGS e-mail list, sent me this in case it would help the southern Wynne's Hope it helps? Gates County, NC Historical Society, puts out a news letter four times a year.......I [Peggy Davis] just received the winter issue and this little story was interesting..... FROM THE PIPKIN FAMILY NEWSLETTER: ISSAC PIPKIN (c 1759-1838) Gates Co. NC. 'Historical Southern Families,' by John B. Boddie, Redwood City, CA 1958, Vol. II, page 267 has information on the'Wynn-Wynne family of NC. The article reports that 'Margaret Wynne', daughter of 'Benjamin Wynne', married General Issac Pipkin of Gates, Co. NC. No marriage date or ages are given. Issac's Revolutionay War record is included in the paragraph: Issac's military sketch does not record he was married to Margaret Wynne, prior to his marriage to Mary Goodman. However, this is entirely possible for Issac and Mary's first child was born in 1798 when he would have been at least 41 years old. Mary was probably much younger than Issac. This information came from C. Ed Ferrell, 512-5th St., Juneau, AK 99801. 3. Just found this hasn't been sent, sorry! Jack Hi Kerry! I strongly believe your g-g-grandmother was the daughter of Edmund Park(s) & Judith Reese Winn (m. 27 Dec 1819, Lunenburg Co., VA). First off, they appear in Cabell Co.1850 census: Winn, Park 57 VA Judy 44 VA Enos 20 VA George W 19 VA Horatio 17 VA Robert 12 VA James 11 VA Ellenor 7 VA ELIZABETH 4 VA There may be another child, William (b. 1826) as he shows in the 1850 Cabell Co. Census living next door. Do any of those names ring a bell? Park's parents were Orsamus & Frances Park(S) JETER.. You might check an old atlas to see if Proctorville, OH was close to the Lunenburg area. There are many out there with more expertise in the Lunenburg Co., Winns. Anybody help here? 3. Sharon, I have Wynn/Wynne/Winn ancestry and was caught by the locality of your family. My gr gr grandfather, Robert Joshana Wynn was born in 1842 in Bartholomew County, Ind. I have not yet determined who his parents were. I am wondering if there could be a connection here. We seem to have several from the Illinois/Indiana area in the mid 1800's. And it blows my mind how they kept electing to spell the last name different ways. We have all three spellings in our ancestors! Do you think we have any connection here in these ancestors. I have another Robert Hughes Wynne, that was born in Indiana ( I am thinking he was Robert J.'s cousin) and lived awhile in Illinois. They both went to Kansas and Missouri a little later, but I have yet to find Robert J. with his parents in the 1850 census. Let me know if you think there is a connection. It is fun to find someone researching the same line to share info. If we are connected, we could share research!
