Author: fullerbb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1670.1.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: What is interesting is that your John Henry Winn born 1829/30 (census' are sometimes off by a year or so) was still in Virginia after so many had already migrated. Va was big plantation country. Usually, the eldest son was left most or all the land by the father. Believe it or not, this custom still occurs today in some areas of old money in Virginia. Some of the census' had listings for persons Free or Slave- Also color as B or M. Another thing is that he appears to be educated & a leader. Ministry was also a highly regarded profession in his era, equaling Law & Medicine. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I don't have specific info on Rev. John Henry Winn, Sr. but according to the Handbook of Texas Online, he brought a group of black farmers from Webberville and bought the land. Webberville is in Travis County and St. John Colony, first called Winn's Colony, is in Caldwell County. Have you checked to see if these counties have historical societies with online access? There is still a church at St. John Colony and the TX Handbook has photos. The church or cemetery might have records that could help.
