Many years ago I found a county history with information about one of my ancestors. It stated he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. I wrote to the Grand Lodge of the State (Missouri) and received a nice reply. They gave me a listing of all the lodges my ancestor had belonged to. Seems he had moved around a lot so this information pointed me in another direction. They also provided information about men with the same surname which helped a lot too. This was not a Winn ancestor. I suggest writing to the Grand Lodges in the States you think your ancestor might have lived to see if they have any records. Worked for me. Kathleen Pebley Winn

He was married first to name unknown probably in Brunswick and married second Ann Stone daughter of John Stone of Lunenburg. Let me know if you need anymore information. I descend through his son Mourning Winn who went to Sumner County, Tennessee around 1806.

Richard seems to have married his wife while in Brunswick county. And there was a Robert Wynne there during that time who is suppose to have had a daughter, Mary. Richard seemed to have married Mary in 1739, probably in Brunswick, however his first land deal wasn't until 1746 in Brunswick. Still checking on the circumstances.

My ancestor, William Winn (1803-1866 KY, OH, IL)is buried in Carrollton, IL. When I finally located his grave, I found that he had a Masonic symbol on the gravestone. I wrote to the local Mason group and asked about records and was told that they had nothing except that he was a member during that time period. Shirley Winn Williams
Thank you very much for the request. Just yesterday, we did find Robert Joshana Wynn with Peter S. and Elizabeth J. Wynn in the 1860 census. So we know that Peter and Elizabeth were his parents. Also living in the house were: F. M. (I suspect that is Frances Marion as Robert J. later had a son named Frances Marion); B. F. (Benjamin F.), Mary E. Tolle (age 8) and J. R. Wynn, age 71, born in Va. and Mary, age 67, born Ky. At this point, I have to conclude that J.R. and Mary are Peter's parents. If any of this rings a bell with you, let me know!!! Dear Brian, I understand that... what I was saying is, they didn't take down any info other than my parents name, so don't know how much that would help you, if that is the same for the mason's. I am helping someone with MONSARRAT and they have a goblet that was given to the ancestor by the Masons in 1855. The ceremony of the presentation is on two sites on the internet. I called the Grand Lodge of Kentucky and found out that the lodge he belonged to is now closed. They told me that they do have some records, and they gave me the name of a Mason who, for a fee, will research Kentucky records, if you have enough information to start from. Supposedly when a lodge closes, the records are turned over to the Grand Lodge. What is the sticking point is if these are in any way organized or assessible so they can be searched, and if there is someone available to do the searching. I know that my stepfather had his Masonic papers transferred several times, and that at least in the 1900's there was a system in place for keeping track of members. Regards, Alex
