    1. [WINN] GERRARD, GRIFFITH,GRIFFIN
    2. Dear Cuzzins...I've been trying to expand my GERRARD (as in William and Sydney) knowledge the past few days and in going to the GoIreland.com website, I found this which I think is interesting enough to share with you, considering our forebear Gruffyd,et al.. Cuzzin Andie in Kailua, Hawai'i Pooolside@aol.comOiffin, (Griffith) <A HREF="http://www.goireland.com/Genealogy/Html/ancestor_search.htm">Trace your ancestor here</A> O Griobhta (pronounced O Greefa) is one of the many Gaelic surnames which have assumed in their anglicized forms those of British families of somewhat similar sound: in this case the earlier O'Griffy has been almost entirely superseded by Griffin. Here some confusion arises because a Welsh family of Griffin did actually settle in Ireland soon after the Anglo-Norman invasion. There is no doubt, however, that the great majority of Irish Griffins are really O'Griffys of Gaelic stock and not descendants of the Welsh settlers. They are very numerous and the name with an estimated population to-day of over eight thousand persons, stands seventy-fifth in the list of commonest Irish surnames. These are chiefly found in Munster - Counties Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork. There was a minor sept of O'Griffy situated south of the Kenmare river, whose existence is recorded as late as the sixteenth century, their location being indicated by the place-name Ballygriffin: little is known of them and they appear to have been absorbed by their powerful neighbours the O'Sullivans. It is possible that some of the Kerry and Cork Griffins are descended from that sept; but Griffin is predominantly a Thomond name. The head of the O'Greefa, or O'Grifee, sept (so it was first spelt in English) was chief under the O'Deas of a territory in the south-eastern part of the barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare, their seat being the castle of Ballygriffy, in the parish of Dysart, near Ennis. Gerald Griffin (1803-1840), best known as the author of that great Irish novel The Collegians, was of this leading O'Griffy family. Also in the literary sphere the Gaelic poet Muiris O Griofa, or Maurice Griffin (d. c. 1778) may be mentioned (Mr. Basil O'Connell's genealogical researches have led him to believe that Maurice Griffin was of a Co. Monaghan family which migrated to Co. Kerry in the eighteenth century). The name is occasionally anglicized Griffith, but most Griffiths in Ireland are of Welsh origin. That name has been made illustrious in Irish affairs by several outstanding men, particularly by Sir John Griffith (1784-1878), the geologist and civil engineer, and by Arthur Griffith (1872-1922), founder with Edward Martyn of Sinn Fein, and president of Dail Eireann.

    3. Is William Winn of Craven County, SC and Camden, SC the father of Mary Winn who married William Reese Busbee (Busby). A grandson of Mary and William Reese Busbee, Reese Schofield of Crawford County, Georgia said his grandparents were born in SC. He also named her as Mary Winn. There is a William Winn who is in the same vincinity as the Busbee family in SC - along the Broad river and his land abutted Miles Busby. The reason we had suspected William Winn to be Mary Winn's father, is that there was a William Winn at Little Union Baptist Church in Crawford County, Ga in the correct timeframe. If anyone has looked at the William Winn's noted in the South Carolina Online Archives collection and has more information about this family, I would be interested in sharing information. Thanks Gaila

    1. [WINN] Wynn in FL
    2. I am a "list lurker" because of my Floyd connection to the family of James Winn-Hannah Withers. I located some records for Robert FLOYD b. 1820 KY d. 1860 Franklin Co., FL in the records of Trinity Episcopal Church, Apalachicola FL. One of those records was a baptism for twins born to Robert Floyd and his wife, Georgianne JOHNSON. One set of baptismal sponsors was Dr. Horace ELY and his 2nd wife, Charlotte DAFFIN Ely. In digging around I found burial records online for St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Marianna, FL. Also buried there are ELY, DAFFIN, ROULHAC, GORRIE and WYNN family members. I throw in the Gorrie because Gabriel J. Floyd, who is either the son or nephew of Robert Floyd, married Sarah Gorrie, daughter of Dr. John Gorrie, inventor of refrigeration. I have a confirmation record for Mrs. Sarah Floyd at St. Luke's in 1866. ROULHAC was the maiden name of Dr. Horace Ely's first wife. The cemetery records are listed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~fljackso/cemeteries/StLukesList.htm with more detailed records of some of the burials at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~fljackso/cemeteries/StLukeswnc.htm Colbert Baker Wynn and his wife Mary Ward Wynn appear to be the first generation of Wynns there. One of the baptism sponsors for the second set of Floyd twins was a Baker JOHNSON. What his relationship was to Georgianne Johnson Floyd is not known, but one of the twins was named Baker Johnson Floyd. I found information regarding Horace Ely and Charlotte Daffin at: http://www.edenfield.org/dbase/dbase19/abm00054.htm Regards, Alex Luken

    3. Hi, I have not had that problem before. I could always access the pages. However, last week, i got a message that the pages were not available. Thats in Virginia....... Hey folks I get very little info on the Winns from Virginia. Gloucester Winn had several children. I looked at some old King William County partially burned records, and his children were tied into with the Indians in King William, the present day Upper Mattaponi. and one gchild went to join the Chickahominy. Ken Adams,,,,,,Polly Winn sold some land to Ann Adams, and other things too....... , At one time the Upper Mattaponi were called the Adamstown Band.
