    1. [WINN] Elizabeth J. Winn, b. VA, d. KY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Winn, Simpson, Riley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FgWBAEB/668 Message Board Post: Am seeking info about Elizabeth J. Winn, wife of Robert S. Simpson married 1861 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth was born 1868 in Caldwell and married Thomas H. Riley on 16 May 1889. Though the kindness of the Caldwell/Crittenden county message boards, I was given the "possible" info on Sarah Elizabeth's parents, including the Winn name. According to Sarah and Thomas' marriage certificate, Elizabeth J. Winn was born in Virginia. Robert S. Simpson was born in Tennessee. If anyone can "flesh" out these bones, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time and help. C J Blevins

    1. [WINN] Richard Wynn of Middlesex Co.
    2. My thanks to Myles Johnson for the response to my questions about Richard Wynn of Christ Ch. Parish, Middlesex Co. I'm working on the parentage of Elizabeth Winn who m. Thomas Fortson, Sr. of Caroline Co.. This Elizabeth has been reported, without documentation, as the daughter of Richard Winn and Ann Cocke. At least the Richard Winn - Ann Cocke marriage existed. However, my Elizabeth as their dau appears unlikely. And the Elizabeth born to Richard and the Elizabeth b. 1702 to Richard and Sarah probably isn't the Elizabeth who married Thomas Fortson either since she would have 39 when Thomas Jr was b. in May of 1742, a bit old for children (but not impossible). One small step for man, but unfortunately not a step forward. Any further help on this line would be appreciated. If I can solve this Winn problem, then I can move on to the Rachel Winn who married Thomas Fortson, Jr. abt 1764 in VA. Earl Ferguson Atlanta

    3. Hi Carol, "The Wynne [not Fremantle] Diaries" is a transcription by Anne Fremantle of the diaries of Elizabeth Wynne (b.1778). Her immediate family (parents & sibs) were rich, Continental drifters accustomed to long visits with friends in cities all across Europe, so the diary is filled with much personal detail (gossip) about famous people of that time (1789-1820). One of her sisters (or perhaps an aunt) was involved with Casanova. Elizabeth (called Betsy) marr. Thomas Fremantle, who became an Admiral and served under Nelson at Trafalgar, etc etc. The book includes a pedigree, titled 'The Wynnes of Gwydir', which is entirely misleading, because the only Gwydir link on it is a line to Sir John as if he was the son of a Richard Wynne, who is given as the origin of this line. This is nonsense but the rest of the chart is useful. The family is known otherwise as having come from Montgomeryshire and it may well have had a past link to the Gwydir Wynnes but so far no one has been able to find it. Ricnard (the second) claimed a right to the Gwydir arms but the College of Arms denied his claim. A son-in-law, however, somehow got the College to grant him the right to include them on his "funeral achievement". From Richard Wynne (no dates are given) there was one son, Richard, who m. Alice Spurstow. They had 7 chn. The eldest was a Thomas Wynne, and he had three chn. The eldest of his chn was another Thomas who is noted on the chart as "lived in Virginia". A College of Arms pedigree of this family obtained by one researcher adds that Thomas "had issue". The second Richard (m. Spurstow) moved to Shrewsbury and his son, Thomas, moved to London, where he became a "Turkey merchant" (ie, a trader/investor with Turkey). This places him in the circles of those then building the various trading companies, such as the Virginia Co., East India Co., etc. It is the second Thomas, who came to Va., who interests us, of course. No one has been able to find any Va. records on him but some recent links have been found between his family and a Hill family that seem to be the direct ancestors of the Hill line which produced one Lucy Hill, who m. my Wynne ancestor, John Wynne (1705?-1772). We know of one earlier marital link between this Wynne family and the Hills, who were also from Shrewsbury & London. Given the tendency of these families to marry those of their own world, we have a possibility that John Wynne was desc. from this Montgomeryshire family. But all this is far from proved. It is purely my speculation that Richard Winn of Middlesex Co. could be one of two sons born to this immig. Thomas Wynne, with the other son being a Thomas, father to my John. The timing is OK but there is absolutely no proof of any such link. 3. Becky and Connie- I am sorry that I did not get back to this sooner but you know how hectic things sometimes get-- You were asking about this A.R. Wynne and who he might be. From your remarks and info I think you have found Alfred Royal Wynne who is the son of Robert Wynne JR and Cynthia Harrison. He was born in Dec. 1800 in Sumner, Co., TN. He married Almira Winchester March 15, 1825. She was the daughter of Gen. James Winchester of Sumner Co.TN and Susan Black. Almira was born March 30,1805 and died June 24,1884. (places unknown). Col. Wynne died Dec.16,1893. He seems to have had many occupations--Milling business-stamp mill-post master for 47 years-a clerk in Cairo-and in 1834 a farmer at Castilian Spring. He is the one who built WYNNEWOOD in Sumner Co.TN. By the way I have two middle names for him but all my info goes with both. One is Royal and the other is Robert (I'm leaning towards Royal). He had a very large family- 14 in fact- I have names, birth dates and some death dates. If this is who you are looking for I can forward them to you. I hope this will be of some use. 3. Myles, I hope you don't mind if I come in here for a moment, you mentioned a Thomas who was possibly one of two sons born to ThomasWynne of the Montgomeryshire/Shrewsbury family cited by Ann Fremantle in "The Freemantle Diaries." 3. Hi Ferguson, No one else has taken a crack at this, so I'll try. This Richard Winn/Wynne is often referred to as 'Wynne' but the extant records almost all use the 'Winn' spelling. Not too much is known of him, altho the Christ Church parish (Middlesex Co.) records show two marriages and 7 chn. No one has proved his parentage or ancestry but he has been assigned (w/o proof) to various Winn/Wynnes. My personal theory is that he was one of two sons born to the Thomas Wynne of the Montgomeryshire/Shrewsbury family cited by Ann Fremantle in "The Wynne Diaries". That Thomas prob. arrived in Va. abt 1640-50 but left no footprints here. The other son of Thomas (my guess) would be a Thomas Wynne (b.ca.1660-70) who had a son, John Wynne (1705?-1772) who is the founder of my Wynne line, of York Co., Va. I have done some digging in Middlesex records and compiled a chronology for this Richard Winn/Wynne of Middlesex: CHRONOLOGY rev. 12/2002 RICHARD WINN (WYNNE) Year Item Source 1630 Possible birthyear 1652 Richard Wynne - on list of headrights claimed by William Owen & Nugent v.I, p.264 William Morgan, for 360 acres on NE side of Skiminoe Creek - [York Co.] 17 Nov 1652 [This Richard could not be the Richard whose fam. is listed below.] 1694 "Sarah Wynn" imported by John Skears w/ 2 others. 7 Jan 1694. Court - 6 Mar 1721/2 I had to bring this over from another program so the formatting may seem irreg. but there are three columns --- Year, Item, and Source. I find that this Chronology format very useful in understanding the life pattern of a person. I can add only that York Co. records also show a line of Richard Wynnes there from late 1600's to 1818. This line could be desc. from either the Middlesex Winns or my ancestor's Wynne. Any additions or corrections anyone has will be of interest. 3. Becky, I am pretty new at the study of genealogy. I spent the weekend looking thru message boards and am a subscriber to the Winn group. A couple of times, I have sent an inquiry about my Wynn(e) line to the group but have had no response with information. I do, however, enjoy the emails. My group (as far back as I know currently) was: J.R. Wynn, born about 1793 in Va. Peter S. Wynne, born about 1810 in Ky. Robert J. Wynn, born in 1842 in Bartholomew Co., Ind. William Washington Wynne, born 1868 in Grundy Co., Mo. C.S. Wynne, born in 1900 in Osage Co., Ks. Lois Nadine Wynne (My Mother), born in 1923 in Crawford County, Ks. >From a couple of messages I read on the message boards, I came to believe you are working on a book about the Wynnes. Is that true? I would certainly be interested in one. I am continuing to work hard on this line and I have reason to believe that we are descended from the infamous William Wynne of Tazewell Co., Va. I would appreciate knowing about the book. Thanks again and I will continue to notify othe group of the information I find. Thanks and have a wonderful spring day!
