Kemis posted this to GAMUSCOG-L (Muscogee Co, GA list) & I thought it was so good that I wanted to share it with all of you. It was written by Darlene Stevens. Take care all! Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: Kemis Massey To: GAMUSCOG-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, June 09, 2003 7:44 PM Subject: [GAMUSCOGEE] Genealogical Poetry Hi all, I know this isn't researching genealogy, but isn't this the picture you want to see? Voices In My Heart It was the first day of census and all through the land each pollster was ready...a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his books and his quills were tucked close by his side. A long dusty ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water as they sat at the table, and she answered his questions the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few. The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red. His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age, the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head, and he saw her lips quiver for the ones that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"... Was it Carolina, or Tennessee, or Georgia or not? They came from Scotland, on that she was clear, But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such. They could read some and write some...though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done, so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp...it's now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census, and scroll down so slow, as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would affect us this way. If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real? We can hear if we listen, the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Hello Herbert, Your email here is interesting, as well as the previous one re Wynne/Winn lineage in Wales (my line also). The rumors of cousins is: Morus Wyn (of Wales) lst md Jane Buckley & had son John Wyn; Jane died & Morus remarried Miss_______& had son Robert (Mayor of Canterbury) & at her death, Morus was married 3rd to Katherine/Catherine Berain (also a mother of several children by Morus). I have seen print-outs of names of 2d & 3d wives reversed - - hopefully some of us can stumble across the main source of these three marriages someday & at least data on Robert & if he is truly the one who was Mayor of Canterbury. Herbert, I wish you the best luck & success in getting the lineage of Robert, Mayor of Canterbury, together for it is of great interest to all our cousins. Hi, Does anyone have a Winn family living in Ohio in early 1800's? I am looking for Elizabeth Winn who was born in Ohio, married in 1836 to Peter Campbell in Indiana.. Peter's parents lived in Delaware county and I have noted a Winn family in Delaware county Ohio in that time period although I have not found any notes on names of children. When Peter and Elizabeth moved to Wisconsin they had an establishment called the "Union House" that was used for and Undergound railroad station according to the present owners. Marriage record shows the name of Winn, however another family record spells it Winne. Peter and Elizabeth had 3 children, Adelia, Emma Moline and William Henry. Most families had some reference to parents or siblings in naming their children during that time period so maybe the names will help someone tie into this line for me. Dear Myles, I finally got a response from the Wynn Bank. Remember I asked them if they are the one's who made your "The First Bank of Wynne" playing cards, and when was that... this is his response. "I had to ask around regarding the deck of cards. Yes, we did offer a deck of playing cards during the grand opening of the existing main branch building, which would have been during the year of 1976. I would imagine those cards are hard to come by, being they are approx. 27 years old. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Hi Everyone, Here are few names listed at this site. http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ Marilyn
Hi all, just a quick hello from "Downunder" from a descendant of Isaac "James" Winn b:1816 Lincolnshire? England. Emigrated 1844 to New South Wales, Australia. 7 Generations and over 250 descendants later we are still here :-). As well as other descendants of other Winn/Wynn/Wynne's that emigrated from the British Isles to Australia. Just so you know, Winn/Wynn/Wynne families and Descendants exist not only in USA so some of us not living in the USA may have trouble placing some of the references a lot of you use. i.e: CO, NE, MN, MT, PA, (Well to me as a radio Technician the PA is the Final Amplifier section in a radio transmitter :-) .) NY is New York State I think, but do you know what NSW, QLD, ACT and NT mean? Let alone NI, TI, LHI and FNQ. PA here is also sometimes used in references to "Port Arthur" a notorious convict penal (Read Gaol (Jail)) establishment in Tasmania (TAS.). Remember this list is supposed to be International. Oh yeah for those interested: NSW=New South Wales, QLD=Queensland, ACT=Australian Capital Territory, NT=Northern Territory and the others, NI=Norfolk Island (Another Penal Settlement and the resettling location for many of the descendants of the mutineers of the HMS Bounty.) TI=Thursday Island, LHI=Lord Howe Island and FNQ=Far North Queensland. Also a quick thought, has anybody looked at how much wasted bandspace is taken up by "Message Quotes", included in full, in the replies to posted messages? One member of the list consistantly includes upto 4 nested "Quotes" in their replies to the list and as a "Daily Digest" subscriber, it is annoying going through all the previously posted messages yet again to get to the next message in a digest. By the way none of this is meant as a "Flame" of any type, just a little suggestive advice ;-) , as we all are probably related somewhere in the the past, as all Winn/Wynn/Wynne families originate from the British Isles! It's just I haven't seen any reference to a "Moderator" for this list and so don't know who else to talk to. Regards, (Don't shoot the message bearer!)
