The thinking was that the Union forces would or could not ever reach Richmond under any forseeable contigincy and that county records would be secure in Richmond. Richmond all but burned to the ground and most county records were lost. In the case of York Co. one Bolivar Sheild was responsible for the re location of the York Co. record to Richmond. Sheild realized that there was not enough time to relocate the entire Yord Co. record dating to the early 1630's to Richmond in advance of the Union attack on the Peninsula. With some foresight he buried the entire record in a ice house under various levels of materials and it is through his foresight that many original colonial York Co., Virginia records survive. I'm not sure why this subject heading is still used - the subject material has drifted far from the subject heading and it continues the error that George Winn (should be Wynne or Winne) was alive in 1634 and that he was active as a draper when he died in 1610. The only reason to include a date of 1634 is that his son Edmund is recorded with George in the London Visitations of 1634 but he is certainly deceased by that time proven by his will. 1. [WINN] Honora ("Nora" or "Hanna") Winn Donnelly Williams, the widow of Elisha Williams
    2. Donnelly
    3. Hi, I am trying to track down Honora ("Nora" or "Hanna") Winn Donnelly Williams (about 1827-after 1880), the widow of Elisha Williams. Nora and her son Terrance Williams were living in Chatham, Morris County, New Jersey in the 1880 census. Where is Nora buried? She was Catholic. Nora was my husband's great-great-grandmother. I would like to know more about her history. She is the real mystery in our genealogy. Here's how my husband's family genealogy relates to Nora. My husband's direct male line goes back to Michael Donnelly (about 1822-1850) who immigrated from Ireland to Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. I would love to know from where in Ireland he comes and who his parents were. In 1849 he and Honora ("Nora") Winn Donnelly Williams (about 1827-after 1880) (the daughter of William Winn), also from somewhere in Ireland, had a son, Thomas John Donnelly (1849-1928), who was christened at Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. A year after the birth of their baby, in 1850, Michael Donnelly, died of dysentery at age 28. Michael Donnelly was buried at Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Newark. His remains and the remains of other poor Irish immigrants were later moved to nearby Saint Michael and ultimately to Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, Bergen County, New Jersey where they lie under a large Celtic cross that marks the spot where those buried at Old Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Newark between 1835 and 1910 were re-buried at Holy Cross in 1960. Somehow Michael's son Thomas became the foster son of farmers John and Mary Dardis from Ireland (I do not know where), in Jennings County, Indiana. After 1870 widower John Dardis and his foster son Thomas Donnelly joined the rest of the Dardis family in Madison County, New York. Thomas pursued a career as a train conductor. Two years after Michael's death, in 1852, Thomas' mother Nora married Elisha Williams at Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. Their children included Elizabeth, Terrance, and Honora Williams, and maybe others. Where is Nora buried? Michael and Nora's son Thomas John Donnelly married Honora ("Nora") Heffernan Donnelly (1861-1958) in 1881 in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. She was the youngest child of Irish immigrants Thomas Heffernan (1815-1864) and Ellen Dugan Heffernan (1817-1898) from Rossmore and Holy Cross in County Tipperary in Ireland. I would appreciate any information on the Donnelly and/or Williams and/or Winn families or even suggestions as to how to pursue further information. Thanks, Sharlotte Donnelly, donnelly@one.net http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/o/n/Sharlotte--N-Donnelly/

Your response led me to review the sources cited by the authors in that volume. Forgive me if it seems a bit redundant, but I would like to comment on the descendant chart in the context of those sources. Looking at page 147 of that volume, the authors listed Richard Winn of Middlesex County as First Generation. The christening records of Christ's Church, Middlesex County, were cited to establish the names and birth dates of Richard Winn's children (including an infant son Richard born in 1701 and an infant son John born in 1705). The names provided by the christening records establish that persons with those names were christened in Middlesex County, but the records provide no information about where those individuals later lived or died. The children of Richard Win! n could have remained in Middlesex, returned to England, or moved to any number of counties surrounding Middlesex. On page 147, the authors of "Winn/Jarvis" listed John Winn (m. Mary Pledger) and Richard Winn (m. Mrs. Phoebe Pledger) of Chickahominy Swamp in Hanover County as Second Generation, sons of Richard Winn of Middlesex County. No sources were cited, and no proof or explanation was offered as to why the authors thought John Winn and Richard Winn of Hanover County were the same persons as the infant sons born to Richard Winn in Middlesex County. By current standards of genealogy it is not enough to plug in names that match, and especially if those names are common given names and those names also occur in different counties. The parents of John Winn and Richard Winn of Hanover County were not established by the authors of "Winn/Jarvis." On pages 147-148, the authors listed John Winn (Second Generation) and wife, Mary Pledger, with a family of children (Third Generation). The source for the children's names was cited as an "Opinion" by Chief Justice Marshall on the resettlement of John Winn's estate "at one time in the possession of John Farmer Winn of Richmond, but now lost." It stands to reason that information from the Marshall opinion was passed down in the Winn family, and the authors' use of that information may have been substantially accurate. It's possible that a record of the opinion may still be extant amongst Justice Marshall's papers. Page 148 includes a citation of a bible record that contributed to the authors' documentation of Generation III. The bible appears to have been a Bowles Family Bible, as it listed the births of Thomas Bowles' two daughters who intermarried with two sons of John Winn and Mary Pledger. The source was cited simply as "(Bible)." Some of this may not be of particular interest to you, Robert, but for descendants of the Group K in the Winn DNA Project it is imperative to examine the validity of the premise that Richard Winn of Middlesex County was the proven ancestor of any individuals in Group K. For Group K, the earliest proven family groupings are Minor Winn/m. Margaret Conner, Richard Winn/m. Mrs. Phebe Pledger, John Winn/m. Mary Pledger, Daniel Winn/m. Sarah, and John Winn/m. Ann Stone. The original topic of George Winn, Draper, and your responses on the topic are all interesting. I have read the entire thread and always enjoy learning about earlier EWynne/Wynn/Winn families in England and Wales. Early records and the lapses in those records pose many pitfalls for our Wynne/Wynn/Winn research. Thanks again for your comments.

However, the two authors of the book were well educated and respected ordained ministers who had in thier possession (wish I knew where it all ended up) various family papers and family bibles upon which to draw thier family tree. This material does not appeared to have survived or it has been deposited in an institution and not catalogued. Since the line of Richard Winn and that of Minor Winn is almost certainly not of my line I stay in the background and rarely speak on these two lines as there are others closer to the solution than I. What prompted my initial response was regarding "George Winn of London, Draper 1634" of which almost all is incorrect. George Wynne never spelled his name Winn and he never lived in 1634. He was a Merchant Tailor and Draper to Elizabeth I until her death in 1603. Both he and his son Edmund bough! t Virginia Company stock and the son Edmund appears to have made many crossings to supply Jamestowne in exchange for which he recieved a "particular plantation" of 500 acres. It is a pleasure to communicate with persons who care enough to stay involved in Wynne/Wynn/Winn genealogy. Thanks for your response to my post, and I hope my reply will clarify my earlier remarks regarding the missing link between the Hanover County Winn families and Richard Winn of Middlesex. Group KE in the Winn DNA Project is comprised of kits of descendants of Hanover Co. VA Winn families of two men, Richard Winn (m. Phebe, widow of Pledger) and John (m. Mary Pledger). The Group KE data is currently listed on the Winn DNA Project website as KE, desc. of Richard Winn of Middlesex County. The reason for this is because the lineage info was taken off the descendant chart in the Winn/Jarvis book. If you ask around you will find that no one can independently verify and produce paper trail evidence that Richard Winn and John Winn of Hanover County were sons of Richard Winn of Middlesex County. The problem is that there are no DNA kits in the Winn DNA Project with a proven paper trail back to Richard Winn of Middlesex - those paper trails only offer proof back to Richard Winn and John Winn of Hanover County, Virginia. The Winn surname project is part of FTDNA. There is also a small group on ancestry. Please contact me as the admin on the projects at GramereC@aol.com. I am traveling the next few weeks but will be home then for a few weeks. The groups being discussed all have different YDNA types. It will be easier to answer specifics in e-mail. If it is concerning the George Wynne who was Draper to Elizabeth I then the date is incorrect. George Wynne died in 1610 and was suceeded by his son Edmund Wynne later spelled Winne and by 1667 Winn. With respect to "Winn-Jarvis" what you mention is correct. However, the Y DNA of Minor Winn is identical to that of Richard Winn of Middlesex. So no one is saying that the Holy Grail of a paper trail for these two apparently separate lines has been conclusively established. On the other hand both lines are intimately related either here in America or over the seas confimed by Y DNA test results. Author: stephwm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1661.2.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In response to Larry Guinn's inquiry about the name of the company doing DNA tests for descendants of Minor Winn & Margaret Conner of VA: The company most often used by those and other members of the Winn DNA Project is Family Tree DNA. In response to earlier discussion on this feed, it is my understanding that Minor Winn is the first known generation for that line. No established paper trail exists between Minor Winn and Richard Winn of Middlesex Co. VA (or any other progenitor), as Minor Winn first appeared in Caroline Co. VA c1732 and was last recorded in Fauquier County. Richard Winn of Middlesex County had two sons named Richard and John, christened in Christ's Church of Middlesex Co. VA in 1701 and 1705, respectively. No further records of positive identification have been found for the two sons. This brings me to comment on a topic that I've studied for some time. In 1932. "Ancestors and Descendants of John Quarles Winn and his wife Mary Lipscomb Jarvis" was published as a book of genealogy for a Winn family with roots in Hanover County, Virginia. A descendant chart for Richard Winn of Middlesex County was included, and it listed Richard's two sons as John Winn and Richard Winn of Hanover County. Richard and John, bearing those common given names, were an easy match for the names of Richard Winn's sons on the Middlesex christening records. Presumably, that was the basis upon which the authors charted the two as sons of Richard Winn of Middlesex. The Winn/Jarvis descendant chart is problematic for us today because the authors posed no additional proofs that Richard Winn and John Winn in Hanover County were the same persons as the infants by those names christened in Middlesex County. Richard Winn and John Winn showed up in Hanover County in 1733, nearly thirty years ! after the Middlesex christening records. No records from the intervening years between 1705 and 1733 have been found to document a family tie between Winn groups in Middlesex and Hanover, but burned records in those two counties and surrounding counties have decimated paper trails of Wynne/Wynn/Winn families in tidewater Virginia. By current genealogy standards, further proof would be needed to show that Richard Winn and John Winn in Hanover County were the same persons as the infants bearing those names christened in Middlesex County. Only then could the parent/child determination be made. The authors of Winn/Jarvis can hardly be faulted for their work --as all genealogists know, the next generation back from the brick wall is always conjecture. The sketchy history of Winns in early Hanover County, Virginia, reveals three families. John Winn and wife, Elizabeth; Richard Winn and wife, Phebe, widow of Pledger; and John Winn and wife, Mary Pledger. In 1733, set of Hanover County deeds were transacted between John Winn (& wife Elizabeth) and Richard Winn (& wife Phebe, widow of Pledger); and both deeds were witnessed by the as-yet-unmarried pair, John Winn and Mary Pledger. The set of deeds offers tangible evidence that John Winn and wife Elizabeth were a third Winn couple living in Hanover County. Were they the rightful parents of Richard Winn (m. Phebe, widow of Pledger) and John Winn (m. Mary Pledger), or is there another explanation for their relationship? Later records of Hanover & Amelia Counties provide evidence that Richard Winn & Phebe Pledger produced several children born c1730-1740, and John Winn & Mary Pledger produced a family of children born c1738-1755. Any information that would shed light on the abo! ve family relationships is welcome. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
