You will need to do some homework first and then when you do your part, we might even be able to help you find who you are looking for: First are Collin Winn, Ernest Winn and ,Elnora Winn brothers & sister or are two of them the parents of the other? Do you know where they were born (each one of them?) Do you know when they were born? There are so many places that a person can look to find someone you met yesterday or someone that was born in 1346. But, it's the most important when you want some help, that you give as much information about who you are searching for as you possibly can. In return I hope that some of us will see it and jump in and help you out! It's great to see young people trying to search for their ancestors and I that every genealogist that I know would gladly share with a "newcomer" Keep up the good work! Laura

I think I may have figured some of them out and if not, I have made a good try!! 1. John Winn's orphans - I believe that this might be the older brother of Elisha Winn of Gwinnett Co. He is John M Winn and he was born 1766 at Lunenburg Co.,VA. He died sometime after 1796 at Jackson Co.,GA (Now Gwinnett Co.). 2. Elijah, Lemuel & Richard - I believe that these are all sons of Thomas & Philadelphia in that 'Elijah' is mispelled and should be Elisha b.25 Jun 1777, Lemuel is Elemuel b.16 Nov 1770 and Richard is Richard D. Winn b.1779. 3. Abner Winn is another brother of Elisha who was b.26 Apr 1769. 4. Nuby & Lemuel - I think this is a nickname for Genubath Winn, which would be the son of Abner Winn & Lucretia Posey b.8 Jun 1798 Jackson Co.,GA. and again Elemuel Winn as above. 5. John, Francis & Elisha - John I am not sure of, but there was a John Winn who was the brother to Thomas Winn, Sr. (he would be an uncle to Thomas Winn who married Philadelphia Winn) and he married a woman named Frances______. Did she draw as a widow? There are John Winn's all through this family and he could be almost any of them. The ones that I know of in this area are either too young or dead in 1820. The Francis very well fits to be the Rev. Frances Winn and again, I suspect that this is our same Elisha again. Didn't you draw on the amount of children you had, your military service and if you were a widow or orphan? Elisha Winn of Gwinnett had lots of land and he had lots of children. In the will of his father, he was to inherit the legacy left to his father by his father's brother Washington Winn of Lunenburg Co.,VA. This is one of the ties that identifies Thomas Winn of Abbeville Co.,VA to the Thomas Winn of Lunenburg Co.,VA. I know that this is mostly speculation, and I don't have all the records, so take it for what it is. Good luck in your search, Laura

Several of us cousins started e-mailing each other out of her guestbook due to no response from Karen. From there I ended up creating the Wynne Genealogy Society and the WGS e-mail list on Rootsweb. etc. etc. I am not saying her information is bad… I am saying with all things document, document, document, because sometimes a few pieces of paper come in and we find what was originally thought is totally wrong… But that is the fun of Genealogy. As to the second part of your e-mail. There are more than two lines that ended up in PA. Just according to what time your looking at. I am not familiar with the Gruffyd Wynne/Elizabeth Sonlli line and would love more information and dates on them. As to the Dr. Thomas Wynne line, it was originally proved back by Betty McGehee via the President of the American Genealogy Board years ago. I found a change in one generation but it only changed the line from Edward I, to Henry I. As to Dr. Thomas Wynne being the child of John… sorry that don’t fly!!… I paid over $300.00 to bring certified copies of Dr. Thomas Wynne’s baptismal certificate as well as all his siblings, plus his fathers death certificate over from Wales. On Dr. Thomas Wynne’s and his siblings it tells who their father was. Also I paid for a letter from Dr. Thomas Wynne that was mailed from Philadelphia back to Caerwys Wales to his cousin. Proving once again that we had his line correct. I presented these to Timothy Field Beard former president of the American Genealogy Board and he agreed that Dr. Thomas Wynne’s line is proven and no longer in question with these documents. I am also the web master for the Caerwys, Wales wed site and have several contacts in Caerwys who have helped in documenting things back there and over here. I have been invited to attend the grand opening of the bed and breakfast at the Bron Fadoc, [estate of Dr. Thomas Wynne in Caerwy’s Wales], which the Wynne Genealogy Society are all going to attend there in 2004.

I didn't go through all of it, so maybe my saying that it was well documented wasn't the right thing to say if there is something that I am not aware of. It is just that what I had seen, I was impressed with. Now, since you seem to know enough about the Winn, etc. family that I am going to ask you your opinion. I have been of the opinion for many years that there are two completely different families that came and settled in Penn. They are the Gruffyd Wynne line and the Dr. Thomas Wynne line , see below: Gruffyd Wynne and Elizabeth Sonlli of the Denbigh, Wales Wynnes had children: John, Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth (m.Richard Holland) & Jane (m.Joseph Bromfield). The daughters apparently stayed in Wales while the sons came to America and settled in Pennsylvania. Then the family of John Wynne, father of Dr.Thomas Wynne (1627-1691) from Co. Flintshire, Wales and his 1st wife Martha Buttall (who dies in Wales) and 2nd wife Elizabeth Rowden. From Martha they had: Mary (m.Dr.Edward Jones), Tabitha (either stayed in Wales or she may have died young as we hear no more of her), Rebecca (m.Solomon Thomas), Sidney (m.William Chew), Hannah (m.Daniel Humphrey) & Jonathan (m.Sarah Graves). Both families are connected with Pennsylvania and I have often thought that they are connected, but of course I have never found anything that can proove that. I even question the parentage of Dr. Thomas Wynne as being John Wynne since I don't have any proof, only some old letters from years ago. I am going to check out your site and I appreciate you sharing that with me.

    3. Paul, I have located the land where Gloucester lived. Actually at one time it was known as Wintown. Also, there is a church close to Pamunkey with Wynn names in the cemetery. My gggrandfather was Miles Winn, who transferred land to the other Gloucester in 1858. If Ferdinand was the father of the second Gloucester, I believe also he was the father of Miles. I think Miles and Gloucester were brothers, but cannot prove it. Hopefully one day we can talk. My phone number is 804-769-3378. I live in King William and grew up only two miles from "Wintown". I also found a deed where Ferdinand Sr, sold land to William and Mary College. That was around 1815. Any way, hope we continue to communicate. I have some old records of Winns in King William. Ken, I have not been able to verify if it is Gloucester or Sarah who is Pamunkey or perhaps neither. Here is what I know for sure and quandries I have about the spotty information. 1. Gloucester and Sarah were land owners (if Gloucester was Native Amercian could he be a land owner? Conversely could women own land during this period of time? Helen Roundtree in,"Pocahontas's People", refer to Gloucester and Sarah as white land owners (if this conjecture on her part?) Roundtree also says that daughter Nancy and Oney appear later as wives of Pamunkey's (I have not been able to locate the marriage certificate she refers to) Could Sarah have been a Winn who owned land and she married a NA and they used her name rather than his Native name. Could he have picked up the name of an interpreter (I understand Thomas was an interpreter for the Pamunkeys)? If Gloucester is the white Winn who owned land why have I reached a dead end with him? Where did he come from? 2. One of there sons was William (my ggg grandfather).William served in the Revolutionary war (I have a copy of his application for pension). Would a full blooded native American have served and be eligible for a Pension? Would it make a difference if he was 1/2 NA? 3. When Williams son, Ferdinand, filed a claim with the Civil War Commission he stated (in trying to prove he was not a southern sympathizer) that his father William was Native American. This should mean that William was at least 1/2 which would mean that Gloucester or Sarah would have to be NA. 4. Theodore Stern wrote in "Chickahominy: A Virginia Community Indian": "There are lines in which the Indians themselves assert to descent from white ancestor .... among the Chickahominy, the Winn family claim as ancestor a man who is said to have passed through the country during the Revolutionary War in George Wahington's train. He seemed to have settled at Pamunkey, for his descendant in the early nineteenth century is noted as a fisher from that band." Later on in the article he writes "In the Wynn line enters one of the most unualy individuals. As relate above (refers to George Washington troops).... He seems to have settled at Pamunkey, for the earliest link in the geology is described as a fisherman from that band. He moved to the vicinity of Mt. Olivet Church near the head of Rumley Marsh and far to the the North of of the Chickahominy River. Here is 1837 a son, Ferdinand, was born" It sounds like the individual in George Washingtons' troops would be William since we know he was in the Revolutionary War. Gloucester and Sarahs land was in King William County "8 miles west of the Courthouse." What is the location of the land mentioned above to the Glousester land? As you can see I have much that needs to be filled in. Any response to my questions would be appreciated. I would dearly love to see a copy of the marriage certificate Roundtree refers too. If you happen to come across this please let me know. Her is what she wrote in her book: "Gloucester Wynne (d 1802) and his wife and children appear as white land landowners being taxed in the county land books. Two daughters had names (Nancy and Oney) which appear later as Wynn wives of Pamunkey men (marriage records of their children, in turn, which lists parents names). From the estimated ages of Glouster's daughters, I infer that it was a family name, and also a son Ferdinand Sr., who in turn named of his sons Glouster; these family connections are, however, conjectural in the absence of concrete evidence." BTW, I spent months trying to follow the lines in Sir John's little book on the Wynnes of Gwydir. Cuz B make sense out of the insensible. Congrats, and thanks for the effort. But I did find something of interest, there is a Thomas Winn/Wynne listed as "lived in Virginia". I don't recall a Thomas among the Virginia Winns ca 1650-1700 and am wondering what information is available on him. Still looking for the lineage for my Elizabeth Winn who m. ___ Richards, then m2. Thomas Fortson abt 1739 and Rachel Winn who m. Thomas Fortson Jr. abt 1764. Several VA counties have been mentioned for these families; Westmoreland, Caroline, Orange, Prince William. So, who was Thomas Winn/Wynne? Where did he live, and are there any descendants? I keep hoping! Earl Ferguson Atlanta
