    1. Re: [WINN] WINN Digest, Vol 6, Issue 7
    2. Thanks Deanna That is pretty much what I have also. I guess what we are saying is that William Winn father of Martha is the same as William Winn married to Rosa Hampton so he must have been married to Ann Lignan first???? Matthew Smith husband of Martha Winn should be the son of John Smith and Mary Jaquelin. This makes me skeptical that we are looking at William son of Minor. There might be two William Winn's and we are compacting them and merging them here into one. Matthew Smith died in Germantown 1777. Connie Cole

    3. Connie, Nathaniel Smith married Elizabeth.  His father might have been Joseph Smith of Westmoreland Co. VA with  Will probated 13 May 1718.  Joseph named sons:  Nathaniel & Joseph; daus: Mary & Joyce. Nathaniel Smith & wife, Elizabeth had the following children:  Susannah; Clator; Nathaniel Jr; Benjamin; Jemima "Jennie"; Elizabeth; George; Withers; Sarah; Temple.  The children of Nathaniel and Elizabeth lived in Loudoun Co. VA.  On the 1758 (first Tax List of Loudoun Co. VA) reports that Benjamin Smith was the Overseer for Minor Winn Sr.  So it most likely that the Benjamin Smith who married Elizabeth Winn Smith dau of Minor Winn Sr. was the son of Nathaniel & Elizabeth Smith.  Documentation that Nathaniel Smith had a son named Benjamin Smith: From Deed Abstracts, Fairfax County, Virginia, 1750-1761, page 45: Fairfax County Deed Book C, pages 386-387: To all Christian People...I NATHANIEL SMITH of Stafford County, Planter, send Greeting. Know ye...in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and do bear unto my beloved children to wit, CLATOR SMITH, NATHANIEL SMITH, BENJA. SMITH, and SUSANNA COTTON, wife of JOHN COTTON of Fairfax County, & GEORGE SMITH, WITHERS SMITH, TEMPLE SMITH, SARAH SMITH, and JEMIMA SMITH of Stafford County...grant unto my said children the following slaves goods and chattles to wit, I give to my Son, CLATOR, one feather bed & furniture, one young mare (other items)...to my son, BENJA. 3. Wow Deanna ... thanks for clarifying the spelling for "Lingham" - surname of William Winn's first wife, Ann. Hoping that everyone interested who descend from Minor and Margaret caught this, and can make use of it. Certainly appreciate anything you discover, and hope to someday be able to dig a little deeper in Virginia and Wales. I think we are getting very close to a DNA confirmation. 3. Connie, Here is my Genealogy Analysis of the Will of Minor Winn Sr. and I am including some documentation: Martha Winn Smith dau. of William Winn and wife of Mathew Smith was the granddaughter mentioned in Minor Winn's Will.  Elizabeth Winn Smith dau. of Minor Winn was the wife of Benjamin Smith (she was dead when Minor Winn's Will was probated in 1778) Mary Winn Smith dau of Minor Winn (She was still living in 1778 when Minor Winn's Will was probated in 1778.) Does anyone know anything about Mary Winn Smith? Benjamin Smith did not have a daughter named Martha Smith.  His daughters named in his Will dated 1770 were Margaret Smith and Suzan Smith.  Documentation:     Fauquier co. Marriage Record:  Smith, Mathew married Martha Winn Nov. 25, 1771, bondsman James Winn   In the WILL of MINOR WINN (Written 31 Jul 1775, recorded 23 Mar 1776 in Will Book 1 pg. 343 Fauquier Co. VA, probated 23 Mar 1778), a good Genealogy Analysis of Minor  Winn's Will is  that his daughter, MARY WINN SMITH is still living and that his daughter, ELIZABETH WINN SMITH is dead.  Benjamin Smith does not mention his wife in his Will dated 1770 therefore his wife has died before 1770. The best analysis for Elizabeth Winn Smith and Benjamin Smith are that both Benjamin Smith and his wife, Elizabeth Winn Smith are dead when Minor Winn Sr. wrote his Will in 1778.   From Minor Winn's Will dated 1778: *"Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter MARY SMITH and equal part of my estate that is sold after paying my just debts to she and her heirs forever." ****************** "Item: I give and bequeath to my granddaughter MARTHA SMITH one negroe girl named Lucy now in her possession to she and her heirs forever. ************** "Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH SMITH'S CHILDREN forty pounds to be equally divided among the whole after the decease of my wife."  (Minor Winn bequeaths in his will to daughter Elizabeth Smith's children.  Proving Elizabeth Smith is deceased.)   *In the WILL of BENJAMIN SMITH dated 30 Sep 1770 (Will Book O 1752-1773 Halifax Co. VA) BENJAMIN SMITH does not name his wife OR speak of her (which would indicate that she is already dead.  In fact Benjamin asks that his oldest daughter to raise his youngest son.) " Will of BENJAMIN SMITH dated 30 Sept 1770 HALIFAX Co VA Will Book O 1752-1773 (Chiarito) Sons: Minor Winn Smith, Weathers Smith, John Winn Smith and Weaden Smith Daughters: Margaret Smith and Suzan Smith. ..."on condition my eldest daughter raising of my youngest son".  s/Benjamin Smith Exr: MINOR WINN Wit: Samuel Hoskins, Thomas Vaughan, SMITH JOHNSON." 3. Jon,  yes the transcribed record by John Gott says "Lingham" with a "m".  I am sure that Gott transcribed the spellings "as written" from the original records in his book just as I did his transcript. I have never researched the Lingham/n Surname so I don't know the way it was spelled in the 1700's or now.  Which ever way it is usually spelled is okay with me. I agree that this particular VA deed certainly documents so many things.  I think it is a real find for someone who descends from Wm. Winn and his dau. Martha Winn Smith.  And it certainly documents that Martha Smith was the granddaughter and not a daughter of Minor & Margaret Conner Winn.  Good to hear from you. Author: jasche Surnames: Winn Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.winn/1705/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Oldest African-American dies at 113 >From CNN: http://tinyurl.com/4hv8ukz Mississippi Winn didn't get caught up in the amazing statistics that accompanied someone her age. Only 1 in 5 million people in the industrialized world live to be 110. About 60 people that age live in the United States, with another 300 or so scattered around the globe. Nine of 10 are women. Winn was believed to be the oldest living African-American when she died Friday afternoon in Shreveport, Louisiana, at 113. Investigator Milton Carroll of the Caddo Parish Coroner's Office said he was not permitted to disclose a cause of death, but a relative said Winn -- who was nicknamed "Sweetie" -- had been in declining health since last autumn Robert Young, a senior claims researcher with the Gerontology Research Group and a senior consultant for Guinness World Records, visited Winn at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in July 2010."She looked to be in very good shape," he said Saturday. "It was a surprise she went downhill so fast. "Young believes Winn's parents were born into slavery. Her father was born in 1844 and her mother in 1860. But Winn "never discussed it," said her great-niece Mary C. Hollins of Shreveport. "She would say, 'I don't know about that.'"Winn, who did not marry and lived independently until 103, appears to have lived a life that made her especially well-qualified for the elite club of supercentenarians -- those who live to be 110 or older."She had always been kind to others," Hollins said on Saturday. "She was always respectful."Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover said the city has honored several centenarians."We have declared March 31 as Ms. Mississippi Winn Day since her 110th birthday," he wrote i! n an e-mail."Our thoughts and prayers are with Miss Winn's family, relatives, her beloved Pastor Clarence Hicks and her church family and friends who all loved and cherished her," he said. The secret to living to and past 110, besides not having an unhealthy weight, said Young, is a positive attitude and emotional and physical stability. Most supercentenarians take little medication during their lives, he said."They do things in moderation," he said. "They don't get upset."Most were still walking at age 105, he added.Born in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, on March 31, 1897, Winn moved with her family to Shreveport after her father died in 1908.One of 15 children, eight of whom lived to adulthood, Winn had a sister who lived to be 100 and a brother who lived to 95.She worked as a domestic, cooking and helping families raise children. I am not sure who his grandfather or where Homer Winn's place is in the tree. My great-grandfather was a black man of very light complexion and wavy hair. I am curious as to how the names were changed from Winn to Wynn later on. This subject is very interesting to me........ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
