Since I posted the item below, I have reread my Wynns info, and I think perhaps all these Captains in the court record were captains in charge of the civilian war effort in the county in some way. There couldn't be that many military captains in such a small area, could there? I recommend "William Johnson's Natchez". I have both books and read "The Barber of Natchez" first. It has little that is not found in "William Johnson's Natchez" which is William Johnson's diary for 1835 to 1851 when he was murdered by Baylor Winn. Johnson recorded very detailed items that occurred in his daily life that reveals much about how life must have been for a free black in Mississippi during the period before the Civil War. Plus it gives much insight about the white people in Natchez and their daily lives. It is very good reading for information about life in the early 1800's. There is a 64 page Introduction to the diary that tells much about the trial, the evidence and various aspects of that trial. I think a bonus to this book is found in the footnotes. In these footnotes, one can find numerous references to three Winn families in Natchez during the period 1835 - 1851. I found the diary to be very interesting. Also, check out www.georgiawinn.com for information about Baylor Winn after Natchez, and his descendents. Early in August, a message appeared that contained the names: Mary Ann Ellis, Philip Pledger, Richard Winn, and Phoebe Wilkes. I don't know whether the following is the Mary Ann Ellis in question. My ggg grandfather, Thomas Winn, was married three times, and his first was to a Mary Ann Ellis, daughter of John Ellis and Susanna DuVal. Thomas and Mary Ann had two sons: John Ellis Winn, b. 5/3/1799, and Jesse Winn, birth date unknown. From information that I have been able to find, including information that Bowles family researchers have contributed, Thomas (born 8/20/1774, Hanover County, VA, died 12/26/1835, Barren County, KY) was a son of John Winn, Jr. and Mary Bowles. John Winn, Jr. was a son of John Winn and Mary Pledger. Thomas Winn's second marriage was to Ann Johnston (parents unknown). They had three daughters: Mary Bowles Winn, Lucy Winn and Anne Winn. Thomas Winn's third marriage was to Elizabeth (Betsy) Depp, daughter of William Depp and Elizabeth Walker. Their children were: Sarah Elizabeth Winn, Peter Henry Winn, James Manning Winn, Elmore Depp Winn, Nancy Austin Winn, Walter Henry Winn, Marcus De Lafayette (MDL) Winn and Martha Asneth Winn. Regina, Regarding Asa Barnes Winn-- Asa Barnes Winn (b 1802) was the youngest son of Alexander Winn. Below is what my cousin, Jane Peyrouse submitted to "Migrations": Jane Peyrouse to "Migrations" Captain Asa Barnes Winn, son of Alexander(1754-1828) and Elizabeth Winn, had been a captain in the Nottoway County, VA, militia before deciding to take his inheritance and go to Alabama. He married twice, Elizabeth Ann Schwartz, daughter of John and Elizabeth Schwartz of Nottoway County, VA, and second Ann Elizabeth Robertson, daughter of John Archer and Elizabeth Royall Robertson of Amelia and Nottoway Counties in VA. By his first wife he had Julia and Virginia. By his second he had Elizabeth, Walter E., and Henry J. He was a planter and staunch Episcopalian responsible for building St. Andrews Church, Prairieville, AL. Information is from family records and from Wassell Randolph\'s, \"Descendants of the Rev. George Robertson of Bristol Parish, Virginia. Henry J. Winn was my great grandfather. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, and the secret services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every occasion, they started singing their traditional song: "God Bless America!" I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people. How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy. What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their galloping history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace. I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion... Only freedom can work such miracles. Cornel Nistorescu (This deserves to be passed around the internet forever.) ___________________
The will of Alexander Winn, Asa's father, was probated in February 1828 in Lunenburg Co. Alexander directed that all his property was to be sold and the proceeds divided among all his children (and one grandchild, the daughter of a deceased child) Asa Barnes Winn and his brother Joseph were executors of that will. Asa Barnes was married twice, first to Elizabeth Ann Schwartz of what is now Blackstone, Nottoway Co. His second wife was Ann Elizabeth Robertson, daughter of John Archer Robertson and Elizabeth Royall. The Robertsons moved from Amelia Co to Nottoway about 1810 and divorced in Jan 1814. Most of the Winn descendants left the Lunenburg area following their receipt of their share of Alexander's property. I'm delighted to see posted Daniel Winn's lineage. Thank you for sharing. I 'v always wondered if our Winns were originally from Wales. Hello Juneau, Thank you for the reply and the information on your family. I didn't notice the spelling of the Embrey names, but do know that sometimes spelling doesn't mean much. Actually, we are related through the Winns. Your Alexander Winn, Jr. was brother of Asa Barnes Winn who came to Merango County Alabama. It seems like the Winn family all headed southwest--another brother, William, came to Mississippi. Another brother who's destination I failed to put in my database, settled in Jackson County, Alabama. (I know this from researching my husband's family in Jackson County.) No, I don't believe so. My grandfather was Joseph Myrtle Winn of Sabine Parish, Louisiana. His father, John Alvin Winn, and his grandfather, Alvin W. Winn, were also of Sabine Parish, Louisiana. His great-grandfather, Ira Winn was born in Abbeville County, South Carolina and moved to Nachitoches Parish, Louisiana during his lifetime. His great-great-grandfather was Alexander Winn of Lunenberg County, Virginia who moved to Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana also. His great-great-great grandfather was also named Alexander Winn and was also born in Lunenberg County, Virginia. The place of his burial is unknown to me. His great-great-great-great grandfather was Daniel Winn of Prince George County, Virginia and later of Lunenberg County, Virginia. His father was Thomas Wynne III of Prince George County, Virginia. His father was Thomas Wynne of Charles City County, Virginia, and later of Surry County, Virginia. His father was Robert Wynne of Canterbury, England and later of Charles City County, Virginia. All earlier progenitors were of Canterbury, England, and going up (backwards?) were another Thomas Wynne, another Robert Wynne, John Wynne, Maurice Wynne, Meredith Wynne, Evan Wynne, another Robert Wynne, another Meredith Wynne, Howell Wynne, and a David Wynne who was married to Emma Plantagenet. Hope this helps. As per an agreement, initially all sales revenues went to Becky to compensate her for the work of indexing and putting the papers on CD as it was a job of considerable size. The initial sales period has expired and all rights have reverted to the author, myself, and The Wynne Family And Kinsmen Association, Inc. Please contact me personally for this CD and a list of others. Sincerely, Dennis Wynn --- "Doris R.
