Win who was born in 1819 , I believe in northern Virginia, and married Mary A. Derry on Jan. 1, 1842 in Loudoun County , Virginia. Could this John Win be the same as you have listed? Thanks, William Winn
Dennis and Charley, I've been reviewing my husband's Arrington research for my daughter this week, and I found something that may explain the patroller's being assigned to Captain Wynn's District in our background. In the Arrington documentation was a list of the Captains of tax districts in Nash County during that same era. Each person responsible for a tax district had the title Captain in front of his name. Perhaps that is what the references to all those Captains in Bertie County was all about. Jo

We have been discussing this for quite a few years, especially this year. There are references that he came from Wales in a few histories between 1890 and approx 1930. And we have had the most difficult time finding his real parents. There is NO PROOF whatsoever that his father was also a "Minor Winn," or that he was from the Gwydir line through Sir John Wynn, as many late pedigrees purport. His son Richard is my 5th great grandfather, proven. His daughters seem to be known. The following address is a very good pedigree reference, expressing doubts about one of his daughters being "Lettice Winn," while confidently listing others. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3085421&id=I995&ti=5535 Please let us know the date of the article "Genealogies of Virginia Families," and it's source references. Becky or Dennis I just got around to looking at the CD's with the Alpha Papers. I found much of interest but there was a mention of one of the family charts that is of particular interest to me, and that is Chart # C210. One of the court statements mentioned some men who had been appointed as "patrollers" in Captain Wynn's district. The only patrollers that I know about in history were people who were on the lookout for runaway slaves. During wartime, it is customary to have civilian security organizations of some kind. Could this be what was going on?
