    3. While doing some research yesterday at the Swemm Library at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg,VA yesterday, I came across the following in the William and Mary Quarterly, series 2, Vol.7, pg 220: " Thomas Winn in 1768 with wife Elizabeth took up land in Loudoun Co.,VA upon which he had "been living for many years". They had children George, Owen, John and Mary. Of these, George whose wife was Lettice of Fairfax Co.,VA but removed to Fayette Co.,Ky about 1786. Thomas Winn and his other children, Owen, John and Mary moved to Kentucky, Thomas and wife probably going to Woodford Co., but Owen and John settled on Stoner's Creek, Fayette Co., adjoining the lands of their brother George. Owen Winn married Mary, daughter of John Cotton of Nelson Co.,Ky......." the article goes on to name the children of Owen and Mary for anyone interested and it was contributed in 1927 by a Mrs. P.H. Lane of Philadelphia, PA Hope this is helpful to some one. Carolyn Winn Markie

    3. Subject: [WINN] Re: Thomas, George & Owen WINN -- VA > KY 1700's You mentioned that "George Winn on Treasury warrant settled on 1,000 acres in Fayette County, Ky. Will probated in 1802, witnessed by Henry Cotton, John Winn and Hendley. Owen Winn, August 16, 500 acres on Stoners Fork. Minor Winn, September 1, 1786, 2,600 acres on Licking; son David, grandson John D. Winn." You don't mention my ancestor, Thomas Winn who came with George and Owen. Julie Zapf posted this: Still looking for info on the parents of Thomas, George and Owen WINN, who migrated with their families from Virginia to Fayette and Clark Counties Kentucky ca. 1785. These three WINN brothers were granted land in Fayette County, Virginia (now known as Clark Co. KY) on Stoner's Fork of the Licking River in March 1784. They settled in Fayette Co., KY in the area south of Athens. An outline of these three brothers and their families are as follows: Thomas WINN b. ca. 1732 VA, d. ca. 1795 Clark Co. KY, m. Mary (possibly SCOTT). Children: 1. William WINN b. 1768. 2. John WINN b. 1770, m. Mary HAZELRIGG. 3. Thomas WINN b. 1772, m. Sarah JOHNS(T)ON, d/o George JOHNS(T)ON & Sarah ROSS. 4. James WINN b. 1773, m. Nancy JOHNS(T)ON, d/o George JOHNS(T)ON & Sarah ROSS. 5. Daniel WINN m. Rutha. 6. Lydia (Rachiel) WINN m. Richard FAULKNER. 7. Franky WINN b. 1775, m. Archibald HARRIS. 8. Sally WINN m. William WARREN. My ancestor is #1 - William Winn. I posted this information several times: One reesearcher in Ohio was very good and she found in the basement of the Clermont County Courthouse, uncatalogued, the estate papers of William Winn, the father of our William Winn who came to IL in 1829. There was no will and the estate papers did not list heirs. She found a store ledger where the elder William Winn had an account and it listed him buying something for his son Thomas (I sent it to Wanda Winn Smith in CA since Thomas was her ancestor) but it did not mention our William. So I have just circumstantial evidence that our William was the son of the William who died intestate and whose papers I am referring to. I sent this message 1/22/99 to the Winn list: William Winn Clermont/Brown Co. Ohio Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 20:28:42 -0800 From: "Shirley E. Williams" <[email protected]> Winn list <[email protected]> Is anyone doing research on the Winns in Clermont/Brown Co. Ohio? I have good reason to connect my William Winn Jr. to his father William Winn in Clermont Co.: My line goes back through William Winn b.17 May 1803 in KY -> his father William Winn b. 1759 Clark Co, KY, d.1822 Clermont Co, OH. I believe my William to be the elder William's son for the following reasons: 1. One of William Jr's sons, Richard Byrd Winn, names William Winn of KY and OH as his grandfather in a letter 21 July 1929. 2. William Sr owned land next to Aaron Osborne in Clermont Co, OH, and William Jr. married Phebe Osborne, Aaron's daughter. 3. William Sr had a sister Frankey who m. Archibald Harris. William Jr. and Phebe had as a witness at their marriage Nancy Harris, a daughter of Archibald and Frankey Harris. 4. William Sr was a gunsmith and William Jr was a gunsmith. When Richard Byrd Winn made a declaration for Civil War Invalid Pension, he stated: "Father residing 8 miles NE of Greenfield, was then engaged in farming but was by trade a gunsmith." The Greene Co, IL Historical and Genealogical Society has the following: "12 Jan 1922, Another O T Remembers: I remember when William Winn and his son George had a gun shop in a log cabin, on what has since been known as the Fred Fishback Farm and they lived in another cabin on the place. They made "hair trigger" rifles, and everybody who could afford it had a Winn rifle." 5. William Jr went to IN with Thomas Winn, Wm Sr's son who was also a gunsmith. 6. William Jr and his son George Washington Winn signed the Civil War widow pension papers of Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Wm Sr's daughter Jane Winn who m. Samford Shipman. I wish, however, that I had a land record or something to tie my William to his father, William Sr. Does anyone have any information on this Winn family?
