My Alex Winfield is African American. I know he did communicate with Caucasian relatives in Ohio, after coming to Texas. He was stationed at a fort in Texas for the 1870 Census. He was a Buffalo Soldier. I'll continue to research, but if any if this 'rings a bell' let me know.
