Through research, I would be the great-grandson of Hardy Winfield and Nettie (Lacie), grandson of Blair Winfield and Mary (Johnson), son of George E. Winfield (deceased Mar 2014 Hampton VA). Interesting enough you state that Margaret and George were never married and the possibility George may have been white. According to our family lore, our ancestors were owned by slave owners from England. Two brothers in fact, one of which may have been George who fathered children by one of his slaves and the reason why Margaret last name is listed as Winfield despite they were never married. I had never heard of a Hardy's brother Frank but it is a good possibility we are related. Hopefully the information that George Winfield having a brother from England who settled in VA will be helpful finding more information about him.
