The history I have says he was a free settler however my research says he was a Convict and was Transported on the vessel Chapman departing from England on 12/04/1826. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Garrett Winfield who I believe migrated to Tasmania in Australia from Dublin in Ireland. He married Ann Gibney and they had 7 children (6 boys and 1 girl). I have conflicting stories about his arrival in Australia. One story is that he was a Convict and when free married Ann in Tasmania, and the other is that he was a free settler and was employed by the Goverment as a Surveyor. He later relocated to Bendigo in Victoria. Thomas drowned attempting to rescue a person in difficulty in the swollen Murray River.
