    1. [WFLD] Newcomer requesting help on John (William) Winfield
    2. Kay Feltham
    3. Hello Everyone, I'm a newcomer so I shall apologise beforehand if I make any mistakes! (It's a strong possibility as I'm always doing daft things like baking an apple with salt instead of sugar. Did that a couple of days ago). However, back to genealogy. I've come up across a brick wall early on in researching my paternal grandmother's line. Emma Winfield b.1885 was married to Horace Willgoose in Sheffield, Yorkshire, U.K. Her parents were John (aka William) Winfield b.abt.1853 in Melbourne, Derbyshire, a chimneysweeper, and Mary Jane Parker b.1853 possibly in Sheffield. John and Mary married in 1874 in Sheffield and Emma was their seventh child. (Family stories say that Mary was also a seventh child which is supposed to make Emma a bit mystic I think!). Emma's siblings were: Elizabeth b.1875 Flora b.1877 Beatrice b.1879 John b.1881 and two others. None of these children survived to adulthood according to my aunt (Emma's daughter). My brick wall is that it is difficult to find out anything more about John or his parents. Can anyone enlilghten me please? I hope to visit Melbourne sometime to have a poke around but not yet awhile. If I can help anyone with look-ups please let me know. I have the 1881 Census, Vital Records for the U.K. and Australia and a Pigot's 1821 Directory. I also have John Palmer's great Wirksworth C.D. although you can access that on the web, of course. Hope this first message hasn't been too long. Good luck with your research, K http://willgooseweb.accessgenealogy.com

    3. OK, I'm game. My Winfields are the "Ohio Group." John and William Winfield lived in Canfield, Ohio (Mahoning County) in the 1840s. William eventually moved to Indiana where he was a Campbellite preacher. John was a gunsmith and all-around tinkerer who cross-bred strawberries and repaired clocks. Their father, John Sr., brought the family from Leicester, Leicestershire, England, in 1829 and 1830 and 1832. John Sr. was married twice. His first wife was Sarah Shipley and she was the mother of all three of his children (John, William, and their sister, Sarah Winfield Caldwell). After Sarah died, John Sr. remarried to a woman named Ann Rose. Both marriages took place in the Borough of Leicester. I think my Winfields may have originally come from Nottingham, but I'm sort of stuck right now in the Borough of Leicester. If anyone connects with me, I'd love to hear from you! 1. [WFLD] Looking for Nancy Winfield
    2. Hello - I am researching Beatties and have reached a dead end with the marriage of James Beattie to Nancy Winfield. I have notes that say she was born in NY around 1834, but I don't know how accurate that is. Anyone out there who has a tie-in? I know they wound up farming in Wisconsin by the late 1800's. Many thanks in advance - Misty Beattie Reich

    1. [WFLD] WINFIELD/WINGFIELD - JORDAN - VA 1700's?
    2. Hello Winfield and Wingfield researchers, I am getting desperate trying to find connections for TWO of my ancestors one of whom was named WINFIELD or WINGFIELD....it seems to be spelled one way in one place and the other way in other places. My ancestor was ANNE WINFIELD/WINGFIELD who married JOHN JORDAN in 1778 in Virginia. I am trying to find her parents. Their daughter, MARTHA WINFIELD/WINGFIELD JORDAN married JOHN MATTHEWS of Brunswick Co, VA on 18 Sept 1799 and died in Williamson County, TN in 1850. A large group of connected families from Virginia apparently removed to Williamson County TN in the 1800's. Can anyone tell me about ANNE's parents? Thank you in advance for any help. Carole Burnett Cook

    2. Hi Mike I am interested to know where you come in the Winfield family. I finally reached Alistaire Winfield after much searching and have found out a bit more about that side of the tree. Please give more details, especially re Mary Seabrook, my great grandmother, who seems to have slipped the 'births' registration at Myddleton Place. Look forward to hearing from you. Stevie

    1. [WFLD] USENET - 650 Million old messages reposted.

    3. I just received this tidbit of info from another list and thought I would pass it on. >From Ancestry's Daily News: IN THE NEWS ONLINE: USENET ARCHIVES BACK ONLINE =============================================== The search engine Google.com (http://groups.google.com/) has reposted over 650 million messages posted to Usenet dating backto the mid-1990s. For more information, see: http://www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/9320.html You didn't miss them while they were gone, you say? Well, then, you have been missing out on a LOT of fascinating genealogy material. When the Internet was in its infancy, before the birth of the World Wide Web even, there was Usenet. These days, sadly, many ISPs don't even run a news server, and many folks have only accessed the Usenet newsgroups via Deja, or through the gatewayed/mirrored Rootsweb lists. Unfortunately, the auto-moderator for the Surnames lists has been broken for a long time, and is not yet fixed, so the list method of access was closed, and since Deja was sold to Google.com, there wasn't even any web access left. [Of course, you can still search the list Archives here at Rootsweb, http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=SURNAMES-L But that has all changed, and you can now search all of Usenet, or only selected parts, with the wonderful Google search engine. Try it, you'll like it! It might even inspire you to fire up your news reader, and access Usenet directly. It's a wild and wooley, anarchic and wonderful place! -- Regards, Unless stated to the contrary at the beginning of the text, this message may be considered to be in the public domain and may be copied, distributed, forwarded, etc. without infringing upon any copyright to which I may normally be entitled.
