I have no doubt that Winfield was the name of the slave owner. However, my great grandfather was a free man of color in Ohio. My guess is that the plantation was in Virginia, and that his mother 'left', and migrated to Ohio, as so many other slaves did. I want to speak to any Winfields that owned plantations in Virginia. My guess is that this is where he was from.

More than thirty years ago when I was in college, an acquaintance asked me about my Winfields. Seems they had Winfields in their ancestry also. Their Winfield's traced back to a slave plantation in Virginia. There was someone named Winfield who owned the plantation. It's my understanding that slaves sometimes took the last name of their owner. I've often wondered if Paul Winfield, the actor, and Dave Winfield, the baseball player, traced back to that Virginia plantation. "Winfield" is a thoroughly British name, so it's likely that a Buffalo Soldier named "Winfield" would be able to trace that name to an ancestor who had slaves. My Winfields were all Caucasian, but that doesn't mean that perhaps the men didn't father any bi-racial children. If that's the case, then I doubt it was my Ohio branch. The father of my Thomas Alexander Winfield was very religious and was an inventor to boot. I've always pictured him a! s being preoccupied and too busy for any flings on the side. HIs only brother was also extremely religious and was an ordained minister who lived a pristine life, so I doubt he would have had any flings either. So ... my best suggestion is to perhaps try the Virginia plantation. Or ... try Henry Winfield of Trumbull County, Ohio. Or as a last resort in Ohio, there were some Winfields living in Cleveland. I've seen things on the internet about Aunt Sally(?) Winfield (I think) of Cleveland having a major birthday party in the late 1800s. I've never attached her to my clan. Wish I had some solid leads for you. Hope something here is helpful. Happy hunting!

My Alex Winfield is African American. I know he did communicate with Caucasian relatives in Ohio, after coming to Texas. He was stationed at a fort in Texas for the 1870 Census. He was a Buffalo Soldier. I'll continue to research, but if any if this 'rings a bell' let me know.

My great-grandfather was named Thomas Alexander Winfield. He was born in 1847 in Canfield, Mahoning County, Ohio. He lived in Ohio all his life. He died in Niles, Trumbull County, Ohio, in 1925. I have enough information on his life to know he never lived in Texas. In 1880, he and his first wife were producing a baby in Niles (their 4th) and the wife would die two years later in Hubbard, Trumbull County, Ohio, from tuberculosis. Thomas Alexander Winfield remarried and had six more children (all in Ohio). However, it's interesting that your ancestor had the name Alexander Winfield. I can tell you how I think the name came about. My Thomas Alexander Winfield had a step-great-grandfather named Alexander Rose. Even though it was a "step," there was apparently some affection for the "step" family. But an even likelier possibility is that my Thomas Alexander! Winfield was named after Thomas and Alexander Campbell -- the founders of the Campbellite movement, which later was renamed the Church of Christ. My Winfield family emigrated to Philadelphia from Leicestershire, England, in 1830, and immediately hooked up with Alexander Campbell. They became founding members of the Campbellite Church in Philadelphia, and continued when they moved to Ohio. It's likely they moved to Ohio because the Western Reserve was such a stronghold of the Campbellites and the center of the religious revival at the time (1820s and 1830s). "Thomas" is a family name, but "Alexander" was never in the family on either the mother's or father's side (unless you count the step-great-grandfather), so I'm opting for the Campbells as the source of Thomas Alexander Winfield's name. Now, as for whether or not there's any connection between your Alexander Winfield of Ohio and my Thomas Alexander Winfield of Ohio, I don't know. I want to say "no," but I hate to s! lam the door shut on any possibility of a long-lost relative. My Thomas Alexander Winfield had an uncle (William Winfield) in Canfield, who had sons (but I haven't come across an Alexander) and I pretty much know all the descendants. I'm not aware of any other relatives. There was, however, a Henry Winfield living near my Winfields in Ohio who we've never been able to pinpoint. He may have been a cousin. Not a close relative, in any event. If any of this information helps anyone, let me know. I'd be happy to share more.

I am replying to your interest in the name DeCostanzo. My grandparents were Angelina and Francis DiCostanzo. You may note that their name is spelled "Di" and not "De". That is because my dad's 5th grade teacher changed the spelling of his name with the stroke of a pen: "That's not the way we spell it in America!" Grandfather was a longshoreman. He lived on Summit Street in the Redhook area of Brooklyn, NY. That is where my dad grew up. Dad died on October 25, 2001, but when he was alive he would allude to some minor mob connection his father had. My granddad was also known as "The Judge" on the docks of Brooklyn. Supposedly he had some connection to Joseph Bonnano (Joe Bananas). Who knows. He was a good man, hard working and loyal to his family. Angelina is in Heaven. No doubt. I never knew this woman to do anything other than pray. Wherever she went, it always felt like you were in the presence of holiness and love. She was always extremely poor, but her home was always a shrine to the saints. She said so many Rosaries everyday, that I am sure she achieved some elevated state like the orientals strive for in using mantras. She was just a wonderful person. And she is with God. Dad spent 23 years in the US Army and retired a Lt. Colonel. He had dreams of striking it rich. He looked death in the eye and never let it defeat him. He died a poet, surrounded by family and friends. Anyway, let me know if you would like to know more. --Frank DeCostanzo
