Is anyone looking at the Winfield family family of Stoke Ferry, Norfolk.? My ancestor came from there but I have yet to find his link to all the other Winfields of this village. All the best Jane Winfield
This obituary reminded me that in my family there was a Havelock Winfield - born 1867 in Huntingdon, England, the son of George Winfield from Suffolk. George was my great-grandfather's brother. Does this bear any relation to the Havelock Winfield in the obituary please? Best wishes Jane Winfield

Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2dWBAEB/167 Message Board Post: Academy Award-nominated Actor Paul Winfield, who was known for his versatility in stage, film and television roles, including a highly praised 1978 depiction of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 62. Mr. Winfield died Sunday of a heart attack, said his agent, Michael Livingston. In 1968, Mr. Winfield played the boyfriend of Diahann Carroll in her situation comedy " Julia " a role that some suggest helped open television to other black performers. Four years later Mr. Winfield ' s portrayal of the father in " Sounder " earned him an Academy Award nomination. He was Emmy-nominated for best actor in the title role of the 1978 miniseries " King, " and nominated the next year in the best supporting actor category for playing a college chancellor willing to sing Negro spirituals to get donations for his school in " Roots: The Next Generation. " He finally won an Emmy in 1995 for a guest appearance on " Picket Fences. " He played a federal judge whose rulings on busing inner-city children are challenged by a local resident. Despite acclaim, Mr. Winfield was often relegated to supporting roles, including playing Jim in a 1974 remake of " Huckleberry Finn. " Sidney Poitier hired Mr. Winfield for his first movie role in " The Lost Man " in 1969. Other significant roles included an appearance in the Broadway play " Checkmates " with Denzel Washington, and his portrayal of Don King in a 1995 HBO movie. A Los Angeles native, Mr. Winfield was born May 22, 1941. Until he was 8, he was raised by union organizer Lois Edwards, who later married Mr. Winfield ' s stepfather. He was bused to the predominantly white Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and was named best actor for three years in a row in an annual Southern California high school drama competition. He later studied drama at four colleges before leaving the University of California Los Angeles six credits short of a bachelor ' s degree. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Wilson, of Las Vegas. Published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on 3/9/2004. (volunteer submission)

I don't know if you have read my other reply, but you are definitely on the right track with Aryson. His father was David. I haven't been able to get farther back than that... at this point, but I'm certain we will. The Layton line is extensive, with links clear back to Charlemaign and beyond, As long as the documentation is correct... You are a descendant of Charlemaign. Beyond Him the links go back...but are difficult to prove. I found this huge list online, and am going to double check some sources. I think the research is pretty good though. I have a "book" that Boyd sent me, I made copies of it and will send you a copy if I can get your snail mail address, along with some things I've dug up online. I'm returning the book to Boyd, in case other relatives need, or want the information. Fascinating stuff. Impressive. Jenny

I haven't looked terribly hard yet, but a trip to a Federal Center not far from here, may turn up that proof on a Census record. While this site has some census records, the federal center has them on microfilm, and you can often find siblings living not too far from each other... sometimes an elderly parent will live with a sibling, that isn't a direct line, so it is important to know the sibling names if possible. I'll keep looking along that track too. Jenny

I think this is a 1920 Census record. You seem to have a lot more knowledge than I do at this point. I gathered information from Emails. Now Boyd is Joseph Clyde's Brother as I understand, and since he is still living he would be a valuable resourse of information about his grandparents. He may have some good stories to tell. I wish I knew them better, I feel kind of strange asking for information from people I've never met, even though I'm married into the family. I forwarded the emails I have received so far to you. I hope you got them ok. My work schedule has been hectic the past 3 weeks, I'm hoping once we get some people hired and trained things will settle down enough so that I have the energy to go to the library to do some research. I'm glad you are on this site. You will find info. I've paid for a membership (the expensive one) I just hope I have time enough to wisely use it. Terry Didn't even really know his grandfather's name, and couldn't tell me an approximation of Vera's death, he did know her name. I should write and ask Floyd what he knows. I found Lloyd on the social security death index, along with Vera, and both Joseph's. Take Care, Jenny

I cannot find where Joseph Alfred Winfield had a son named Joseph Clyde Winfield. Do you have any proof of this? I was told that Joseph Alfred Winfield's daughter Margie was born to Joseph and Maggie Meeks late in Joseph Alfred Winfield's life. Margie Winfield still comes to the reunions in El Campo every year. I found her and my father's birth records in the following website: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/calhoun/vitals/births/1929/calhob29.txt If you check this out, you can see that my father was born in March and she was born in November. What is interesting to see is that my father's father is listed as Joseph Clyde Winfield and Margie's is Joseph Alfred Winfield. I am assuming that Joseph Clyde Winfield's father was Joseph Alfred Winfield because Joseph Clyde Winfield named his first son Clyde Alfred Winfield possibly after himself and his father. I believe that Joseph Alfred Winfield's parents were Joseph William Winfield and Mary Elizabeth Layton. I belive that Joseph William Winfield's parents were Aryson Winfield and Mary Elizabeth Riley. Ironic that he married a woman with his mother's same name. I can't find the parents of Aryson Winfield. I hope this helps, please let me know if I have any of this wrong.
