Through research, I would be the great-grandson of Hardy Winfield and Nettie (Lacie), grandson of Blair Winfield and Mary (Johnson), son of George E. Winfield (deceased Mar 2014 Hampton VA). Interesting enough you state that Margaret and George were never married and the possibility George may have been white. According to our family lore, our ancestors were owned by slave owners from England. Two brothers in fact, one of which may have been George who fathered children by one of his slaves and the reason why Margaret last name is listed as Winfield despite they were never married. I had never heard of a Hardy's brother Frank but it is a good possibility we are related. Hopefully the information that George Winfield having a brother from England who settled in VA will be helpful finding more information about him. Their son Perter Winfield married Charlotte Freeman and had a large plantation in Anson County, NC along the Rocky River. Their daughter, Sarah/Sallie Elizabeth Winfield married Richard Howell. She was widowed and remarried Job Davis. Sarah and Richard had a son named Jordan (who went by Jordan Jr because Richards brother was also named Jordan). Jordan was a merchant and lived in Cumberland County, NC (Fayetteville) and married a widow, who is believed to be from the north, Her name was Mrs Hannah Handy on marriage bond. Jordan died at the age of 39 in Fayetteville. Allen Newsom did business with Charlotte's half brother. Allen D Newsom and Charlotte Winfield Howell had a son named Allen Howell Newsom who married! Augusta Ingold Virginia Kesler, the daughter of a wealthy merchant in Salisbury, NC (Rowan NC). Her father founded one of the first cotton mills in NC and was a great land owner. Allen Newsom and Ingold's daughter Eudora/Dora Newsom married Edgar/Ed Goodman. They are my GG grandparents. any info on these lines is greatly appreciated! Winfield, who was born in Virginia in 1862-1863. He lived in Sussex county for a time with his mother, Margaret Randall and his younger brother Hardy Winfield. Margaret married a man named Tom Canady but her sons kept the Winfield surname. There is no indication their mother was married before meeting Tom. By this time, the family had moved to Surry county. So far, I know their father was born in Virginia and his name was possibly George Winfield, according to Hardy's marriage certificate. According to family lore, their father was white- possibly a slave-owner. Frank and Hardy were sometimes listed as mulatto on certain census records. Also, while there were many black George Winfields in the area at that time, all of them I've seen were too young to be their father. In fact, most of them were born after Frank and Hardy were. However, there were several white George Winfields who were old enough to be their father in the same general area in Sussex. I know there were many people with the Winfield name in Sussex and Surry. if anyone has any information that could help, I would greatly appreciate it. Winfield of Pike County Georgia. According to Census information, he was born in Georgia. He married Mary "Polly" Gooch in Greene County Georgia on May 18, 1828. They moved to Pike County Georgia before 1850. James L. Winfield, Sr. died in Pike County Georgia in May of 1860 of Cancer. He is listed in the 1860 Pike County Morality Schedule. His age is listed as 70. He made his will Pike County Georgia and it was recorded July 5, 1860. He mentions his wife Mary or Polly and children named James L. Winfield, Jr., William F. F. Winfield, and one other which is unreadable. He also mentions a Grandson of his wife Polly who is living them named James Edwin Gooch. He makes it sound as though it is not his Grandson but is the Grandson of his wife suggesting that she was married before. It mentions that both of James Edwin Gooch's parents are deceased. I am especially interested in James L. Winfield, Jr. and a photo of him if anyone has one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
