Gabower, 89, Mauston, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Reedsburg Area Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1914 on the family farm near Oakdale, the son of Emma and Jess Gabower. He attended Diamond Valley Country School and graduated from Tomah High School. He married Jeanette Steiner on May 27, 1946 and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1989. Al married Marj Smith. Prior to World War II, Al worked his way up to supervisor at Lockheed Aircraft. During the war he was with Lockheed overseas in Ireland. Al was a civilian advisor to the Air Corp after the liberation of France installing Photo Recon Cameras in P-38's and P-51's. Over the years he was involved in a number of businesses, Gabower-Hoile Motors, a Ford/Mercury Dealership, from 1946 until 1953; he built and operated a Dairy Isle soft serve ice cream store from 1953 until 1961; Production Manager for Sparta Brush Company from 1954 until 1960; President of Vacuum Platers Inc. from 1961 until his retirement; Die Casters, Inc. from 1972 until 1990; and was a partner in Mauston Industrial Leasing from 1978 to the present.
