Be sure to state the volume and reel number - sometimes when the county does not have the record, the state will. Is Anna M Birkholz and Anna E Birkholz the same person - or related? Where do I go now to get a copy of the death certificate? Mmmm...I don't think there is necessarily a death certificate for every death recorded in the "Wisconsin Pre 1907 Daeth Index", especially for those who died prior to 1907. I've been told that "official" death records were not required prior to 1907. Dan +++ It is certainly true that there are not registrations for all deaths prior to 1907, but there is a copy of each indexed record on microfilm. The Wisconsin state vital records system went into effect 1 October 1907 Prior to that counties were responsible for recording vital events and maintained the files. A copy of each record was to be forwarded to the Wisconsin Secretary of State. When the pre-1907 vital records were microfilmed it was these state copies, not the county copies that were filmed. The Index is of the microfilmed records, not the county records. For a variety of reasons, including failure to forward copies to the state and the loss or destruction of some county copies, the two files are not identical. Each may have records the other does not, and because of hand-written copies the information may not be identical. Besides the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Vital Records Section, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin has the full microfilm set of pre-1907 vital records. BTW, "pre-1907" means "for events occuring prior to 1 October 1907" even though some events may have been recorded after that date. Thus the pre-1907 films include somewhere between 20 to 30 thousand delayed and affidavit birth registrations, mostly filed from 1940-1942.
