    1. Re: [WIMONROE] Roll Call: SMITH, HILLIKER, BRAMAN, SPOONER, OLSON/OLESON, KJE...
    2. Hi John: It was good to hear from you. If you have a copy of the centennial book of Tomah, you will find there were what appears to be several SMITH families living in Tomah in the early 1900s. My mother was born in Tomah in 1902 to Charles Sidney and Martha (ZELLMER) SMITH. He worked in the Cash Store and H. C. Bongers shoe store as a clerk. In 1920 he ran for, and was elected sheriff of Monroe County, which meant they had to move to Sparta. Charles' parents were George Lyman and Julia Orrisa (CORNELL) SMITH. George was born in Tomah in 1851. Julia was from Michigan. George's parents were John and Margaret (REYNOLDS) SMITH. John was born 1823-4 in Collins, Erie County, New York. I don't know if any of your SMITHs were related to any of my SMITHs, but I'm sure, in a town the size of Tomah, they knew of each other. This has been interesting. If you have relationship news, please inform me. Thank you and I hope your 2001 is a happy one. Ed DUFF

    1. SMITH in Tomah
    2. John Buck, Jr.
    3. Hi Ed.... Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your January E-mail! My mother, Gladys Smith Buck b. 1916 in Tomah, had a stroke in Madison, Wisconsin, shortly after the first of the year and I went up there to help while she was in Oakwood Nursing home for rehabilitation. When it became apparent that our nursing home stay would be prolonged I decided to move her to a nursing home here in Cleveland, which is very close to my house.... as a result, I've let a lot of other things go.... Now that there is a bit of stability in my mom's condition I'm trying to "catch up." My SMITH family arrived in Wisconsin shortly after 1841. They came from Madison County, New York, and settled near Sullivan, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. They are found in the 1850 and 1860 US Census records for Jefferson County; but appear in Oakdale, Monroe County, Wisconsin, in 1870. My great grandfather, H.H. Smith, moved to New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin, after being married in Clifton, Monroe County in 1874. His wife, Lydia A. Wood, died in 1979 and is buried in Oakdale. H.H. Smith moved to Tomah after her death and married Lillian Leona Grovesteen in 1881. None of your SMITH data appears to be related to my family, but let me know what your mother's name is, and the names of any of her brothers and sisters... and I'll check with my mother - though my mother is younger, she may just remember something - and right now, her memory of things past is a bit better than her memory of things present! My mother has a brother and sister - both living in Tomah with their spouses. Jane Smith married Leigh Hilliker; and Charles H. Smith married Viola Gorlewicz (they lived in Chicago, where Vi was born and raised, until Charles retired from Walgreen Co.).... The parents of the above listed SMITH children were Roy A. Smith and Florence Grace Olson Smith.... Roy was a barber, and along with Mark Johnson, owned the Tomah Theater (now the Tee Pee Restaurant.) My grandfather, Roy, had two sisters, Myrt and Lorna. Myrt operated a millinery department in the Cash Store (where she met, and married, Frank J. Skrabek, the store tailor) and Lorna was the city telegraph operator - her office was in the Sherman Hotel. Florence Olson had a sister, Gladys Ellen Olson, who married Charles Cornell in 1910 - I mention this because of your reference to the CORNELL surname below.... That marriage produced one child, Blanche, but ended in divorce in 1915. Gladys then married Mark O. Johnson (mentioned above.) That marriage also produced one child, Virginia Lee Johnson. Gladys Olson worked in the Dime Store which was in the block south of the Cash Store. Blanche married Ray Berg and Virginia married Alfred Bernard "Bun" Janney. So, that is the additional detail that I can provide concerning my family.... some interesting similarities in work place and ancillary lines, but I doubt that we have a connection on the SMITH side..... though..... you never know! <g> Hope that 2001 has been good to you so far, and that the future is even better! Best wishes.
