The notification of the probate proceedings for the Last Will and Testament of William Smith of Richmondville, Schoharie County, NY which appeared in the "Albany Evening Journal" the State Paper, published in the city of Albany commencing for six weeks on January 11, 1866, lists four children of William Smith and Axceny Butler of Schoharie County, NY who were at that time living in Sparta, Monroe County, WI in January of 1866. They were: 1. Salome Orvilla (Smith) Payne, wife of Archibald Payne 2. Casson G. Smith 3. Catharine (Smith) Burcome, wife of Moses Burcome (listed as Burton) and 4. Sabrina (Smith) Isham, wife of Abner Isham I have some information on Salome, but nothing further on Casson, Catherine or Sabrina. It is possible that Casson may also have been known as either Dolson or Dobson. I have a copy of a photograph of William that is said to have been taken while he was visiting his daughter, Salome in 1845 in Sparta, WI. So I know that Salome was probably in WI sometime prior to that date, for the others I have no idea. Sincerely, Roger Smith <[email protected]> Richmondville, NY

I saw this on another list - check it out! This site was created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute and it is a searchable database of their Special Collections. Using this database you can see if a photograph exists of your Civil War ancestor. Just enter the surname you're searching and the results page will give any photos of any soldier with that surname, along with (if known) his regiment. Next, you can send an e-mail with the photo ID's that you're interested in. The Army will then send you (for free) a photocopy of the picture, along with instructions on ordering a duplicate photo. An 8x10 photo costs $10.00. No more then ten photos will be produced for any one customer per year. http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html

Subject: Newspaper Abstracts There is a new mail list and web site at Rootsweb!! This list is for the submission of newspaper abstracts. Newspapers are a wonderful and often overlooked resource for those researching their families. Many fascinating and descriptive details can be found about the lives our ancestors from the businesses they frequented to the hardships they endured while trying to build a new life in a new land. Even letters home from men at war detailing their daily accounts were occasionally printed for all to read. Over the years many records were lost or destroyed in fires, floods and natural disasters. Newspapers include notations on births, illnesses and deaths that occured before local and state governments began keeping records. Other items such as tax rolls, local military rosters, court notifications in chancery and probate, separations and divorces are also given mention. Many newspapers managed to survive the test of time and can now be found at most state libraries on microfilm and are available thru inter-library loan for viewing at your local library. To view our web site, click here: Newspaper Abstracts Home Page (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~newspapr/) And to join our mail list send an email to: [email protected] or [email protected] (if you prefer the digest version) and in the body of the message write only the word: subscribe Feel free to pass this information on to other lists.

I saw this on the "Missing Links" by Rootsweb - couldn't help think someone on the list might have these people in their family: Years ago my mother-in-law found an old family album, she can't remember where. It contains many unmarked family pictures. The names PETERSON, Charles, Annie, and Clara are written in the album. Photographers' names are Geo. E. BALLARD at Waupaca, Wisconsin, and W. F. WEBSTER in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. If you recognizes this as a branch of your tree, please contact me, as this album should be with its family. Karla Wood <[email protected]>

I am looking for information on the Jesse Earl Knight family and I know that he was in Monroe County, in 1910 but I'm not sure what year he came to Monroe County. Jesse married Pearl Ann Aylesworth, born in Leon and her parents were Ambrose Aylesworth and Luella Jane Babcock. They had one daughter Doris born in 1913. Doris married Raymond Harmon, the 21 August 1931. Jesse Knight died in 1964 and Pearl died in 1971, and they are buried in Leon Cemetery. Did Doris and Raymond have a family? Did they stay in Monroe County? I would like any information that I can get on this family. Thank you. Joanne Rohrscheib

The little red schoolhouse that you speak of is in Tomah. It sits in the park (have forgotten name of park) on Main St. at the South end of the main shopping area. I graduated from eighth grade in that school in 1938. Some of the papers that I wrote are still there. It was white at that time and was known as the Watermill School. The Watermill farming community was about 6 miles North of Tomah and was between Tomah and Warrens. I believe that the school closes as a tourist attraction after labor day but am not sure. Dean C.
