Hi Monroe county, Just wanted to ask a question, as there is a lot of interest in pictures. I am able to go into a wonderful web site of the town where I am from and it is the library site. They had listed on the site historical > pictures of the town and > its people. I read that there was a Mrs. Purl Jones picture listed and she is my great grandmother. No need to tell you how thrilled I was to be able to write to the library and get her picture!! I can not wait to see what she looks like. :) My question is: Are there any sites like that for Monroe County? Any town library sites that exist? I realize they are a lot of work, but there probably are volunteers out there willing to keep these up. Marilyn
I, too, would be interested in a Monroe Co site which includes photos. Some county sites, such as Waupaca and Oconto, have Family and Folks pages which include family info and photos contributed by fellow researchers. These are especially helpful when you have a photo for which you cannot identify people or location. I was able to get the names of most of the 56 attendees of a 1903 Oconto wedding by posting the wedding photo to the site and waiting for responses. Is this the Farnham family that was also connected to the Shutter and Boynton families in the County? My great- great-grandparents were Peter B. Shutter and Lucy [nee Boynton] Shutter. Do you find either of these names in your search? I would really appreciate a copy of Tomah Miller School and Tomah High School built after the fire in the 1940's. Is it possible that the mystery photo of the big school could be the Tomah High School that burned? Please send to my e-mail address....thank you. Hi Danielle, WOW, thanks, it would be great if we could find someone that knows about the rural schools around Tomah, WI. There is a tremendous interest in this > from all the email I have gotten!! I do wish people would have written on the back of pictures > just what it was all about and specially names of the people. BUT, they never did, so after they have all passed away we have to do a lot of guessing and research! Does there happen to be pictures in the Monroe County Book of Schools in Norwalk Wisconsin? I would appreciate copies if that is possible. Thanks in Advance, Dena
Hi Monroe schools: I have a copy of Monroe County Pictoial History, printed in 1976. The Pictorial has pictures of many schools from many cities in Monroe County etc. No promises of success, but if you give me the names of the schools and the names of the cities, I will try to find them in this Pictorial. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the last time that I was at the local history room in Sparta, that I saw a book on on old Monroe County Schools, With pictures. Hi, Marilyn, I got your copy of the picture. It looks terribly familiar. I did ask my grandparents if they knew of White Plain School. Grandma said no, Grandpa said he thought so, but the school he was thinking of, my Grandma said was called Evergreen, as she went there for first grade. I live right here in Monroe County, and work at a grade school. There is a teacher there who is very into local history, antiques, ect. I'll see if she knows anything tomorrow. I think I have confused the issue on this school. I am the Barbara who suggested that the school in question might be the old Miller School while the Barbara who originated the question was Barbara Rinard. Just wanted to clarify this. And yes, it was directly across the street from the St Mary's Catholic Church and School. I have no photos of the Miller School. However I, too, would really like to have a copy of the photo. I wonder if that was the old Miller School which we always referred to as the "grade school". However, it was not just for girls. It was a two story brick building.
