Hi All! I have just gotten some photo albums containing LOTS of Braman Family members from my Mother, who is 80 years old....most of the photos are of individuals, but they are grouped as husband and wife on opposing pages. There are numerous generations and lots of pictures. Can anyone advise me on how to determine who these people are or how to go about identifying them? Some of these photos are extremely old...anyone have an idea of when photographs were first printed? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer! Patsy

Hello List, I am seeking any information on the family of Patrick BOWLER and his wife Catherine/Ellen STACK who lived in/near Sparta, beginning in the 1860's. Patrick was probably related to Wm. Thomas, Ed and John Bowler who were some of the first members of St. Patrick's Catholic church in Sparta in 1867. These last Bowlers seemed to have been prominent in the community (they were mentioned in a 1912 Monroe Co. history), with Wm. M. Bowler being one of the organizers of the Sparta Fruit Growers Association in 1896, and several other Bowlers--Ed, Timothy, James J. and George becoming lawyers. Patrick Bowler seems to have made little mark in the community and he moved to Minneapolis with some of his family, likely before 1890. I believe he died there ca 1895. Catherine/Ellen Bowler, his wife, probably died in Sparta before the family moved. All the Bowlers came from Ireland, first to MA, ca 1850's, then to Wisconsin mid-1860's. I hope to learn where in Ireland they may have originated. Hopefully, the better known members of the BOWLER family have left a clearer paper trail than Patrick did. Patrick Bowler and Catherine/Ellen Stack's children, all born Sparta, were: Johanna, b.ca 1866 m. John Carey, Mpls. 1892 Patrick, b. c 1869 Mary, b 1871 Catherine b. 1873 Ellen, b. 1875 I would appreciate any input and info; Thanks, Larayne Carey, Washington State

Great sources are the Census Indexes, Books with Biographies by county, Newspaper Indexes (Obits, Births, Deaths, Marriages), and for WI there is a microfishe of pre 1907 Births, Deaths, and Marriages. Make sure you know where each family member was during what years to make the search easier, as you can eliminate records prior to their arrival. Once you have located all the info at your immediate access, then go on-line. Do the following, in order as of recommendation: -Search the WI Archives at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/monroe/monroe.htm BRAMAN 1 hit CLARK 11 hits LOVELL 0 hits REED 3 hits ROBERTSON 6 hits -Post a FEW well written queries to the MonroeCoWI Board (where this one currently resides). Take time to draft a thoughtful request. A request such as searching for all CLARK is useless and will normally be ignored by the experienced genealogist. However, a query such as the one below, might attract a distant cousin to share information with. Also, have reasonable expectations. Remember, just because the volunteer is FREE doesn't mean they have unlimited time. While waiting for your nibble - check out other genealogical sources. - Register your surnames at the MonroeCoWI Surname Pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimonroe/surname/ Be sure to include surname, given names, dates and places of residence... As for my sources: I use Family Tree Maker to record my family history and have purchased some of their CDs. Also, I check under lookups, many people are willing to do free lookups in numerous sources. Unfortunately, in MonroeCoWI, there aren't any volunteers as of today: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimonroe/look.html However, Monroe County Local History Museum and Research Room does respond to written queries, for more information see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimonroe/MCLHMaRR/ Here is what I found on-line: WI Census: 1860 CLARK WILLIAM Monroe County WI 059 Jefferson 1890 ROBERTSON METHVEN Monroe County WI 002 E.D. 199 Tomah 1890 BRAMAN ROSWELL E. William Henry CLARK was a noted man in Tomah. He owned the mill/blacksmith shop on Saratoga Street, and read Edgar Guest books at public meetings/gatherings. He and his wife Mary Adelia (BRAMAN) were members of the Oddfellows and the Rebekahs. My grandfather, Alva ROBERTSON, ran the mill/blacksmith shop until he died. Methven ROBERTSON, Alva's grandfather, is another hard link to research. I have found nothing on Alva's parents, John & Margaret J. (McMULLEN) ROBERTSON. I have found some data on Methven, but not enough to jump start my research. I have also found some data on the other set of gggrandparents....Roswell Emerson & Zerviah Chloe (SPOONER) BRAMAN, parents of Mary Adelia (BRAMAN) CLARK. The McMULLEN's are a complete deadend...no data anywhere... Sentimental tokens such as these, collected throughout the years, are often stashed away in attics or buried deep in basements, waiting to be rediscovered by succeeding generations. But care must be taken to preserve such family heirlooms, or all that may be left for posterity is crumbling pages and moth-eaten material. On 10 October, at 6 p.m., the Newberry Library's Friends of Genealogy (FOG) membership group will present "Ask the Experts: Protecting Your Family's History," featuring a panel of experts who will discuss general conservation principles for preserving a myriad assortment of family treasures. Dan Cochrane, a professional conservator, will talk about preserving photographs. Stephanie Orphan, Archives Director at the Museum of Broadcast Communications, will address audio/visual materials. Susan Russick, Director of Conservation at the Newberry Library, will discuss books and paper-based materials. Joel Thompson, an Assistant Conservator at the Chicago Historical Society, will lecture on textile and three-dimensional objects. "Ideal conservation standards are difficult to achieve in the home, primarily because of the problem of controlling humidity," said Susan Russick. "Temperature, humidity, light, pollutants, pests, and even vibrations can accelerate deterioration. I recommend that people focus their preservation efforts on providing appropriate housings, such as boxes, folders, and frames." Admission is $10, or free for FOG members. I have a Justus Franklin RATHBUN, son of James E. and Ruth (CUMMINGS) RATHBUN b. NY State 27 Sept. 1832. Can anyone tell me if he is the son of James and Ruth RATHBUN - this James the son of Valentine W. RATHBUN of Onondaga Co., NY? Or in anyway related to him? Or who he is descended from? :o) If so I have additional information to share on Justus. I would appreciate any help you can offer! Checkout this neat site for the Yellowstone trail that Joan Benner CC for Adams and Marquette sent. Joan, Thanks for the info on Yellowstone trail in Wisconsin. This is too cool. I am passing it on to the WI people who were interested... notice it goes through St Point... too fun. That sounds about right, as we were all looking for info a few years back - mainly the old route through WI... So, this is awesome. Again, Thanks. I had alomost forgotten to mention...The cornerstone opening and the anniversary service for St. Johns Ridgeville were videotaped, and the pastor is looking into having copies made for anyone who wants one. I don't know anything about the price yet, but will let you know if you are interested. If you do have any interest in a copy, let me know. I imagine that he will only make as many as are needed. Hi Ed.... Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your January E-mail! My mother, Gladys Smith Buck b. 1916 in Tomah, had a stroke in Madison, Wisconsin, shortly after the first of the year and I went up there to help while she was in Oakwood Nursing home for rehabilitation. When it became apparent that our nursing home stay would be prolonged I decided to move her to a nursing home here in Cleveland, which is very close to my house.... as a result, I've let a lot of other things go.... Now that there is a bit of stability in my mom's condition I'm trying to "catch up." My SMITH family arrived in Wisconsin shortly after 1841. They came from Madison County, New York, and settled near Sullivan, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. They are found in the 1850 and 1860 US Census records for Jefferson County; but appear in Oakdale, Monroe County, Wisconsin, in 1870. My great grandfather, H.H. Smith, moved to New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin, after being married in Clifton, Monroe County in 1874. His wife, Lydia A. Wood, died in 1979 and is buried in Oakdale. H.H. Smith moved to Tomah after her death and married Lillian Leona Grovesteen in 1881. None of your SMITH data appears to be related to my family, but let me know what your mother's name is, and the names of any of her brothers and sisters... and I'll check with my mother - though my mother is younger, she may just remember something - and right now, her memory of things past is a bit better than her memory of things present! My mother has a brother and sister - both living in Tomah with their spouses. Jane Smith married Leigh Hilliker; and Charles H. Smith married Viola Gorlewicz (they lived in Chicago, where Vi was born and raised, until Charles retired from Walgreen Co.).... The parents of the above listed SMITH children were Roy A. Smith and Florence Grace Olson Smith.... Roy was a barber, and along with Mark Johnson, owned the Tomah Theater (now the Tee Pee Restaurant.) My grandfather, Roy, had two sisters, Myrt and Lorna. Myrt operated a millinery department in the Cash Store (where she met, and married, Frank J. Skrabek, the store tailor) and Lorna was the city telegraph operator - her office was in the Sherman Hotel. Florence Olson had a sister, Gladys Ellen Olson, who married Charles Cornell in 1910 - I mention this because of your reference to the CORNELL surname below.... That marriage produced one child, Blanche, but ended in divorce in 1915. Gladys then married Mark O. Johnson (mentioned above.) That marriage also produced one child, Virginia Lee Johnson. Gladys Olson worked in the Dime Store which was in the block south of the Cash Store. Blanche married Ray Berg and Virginia married Alfred Bernard "Bun" Janney. So, that is the additional detail that I can provide concerning my family.... some interesting similarities in work place and ancillary lines, but I doubt that we have a connection on the SMITH side..... though..... you never know! <g> Hope that 2001 has been good to you so far, and that the future is even better! Best wishes. Hi John: It was good to hear from you. If you have a copy of the centennial book of Tomah, you will find there were what appears to be several SMITH families living in Tomah in the early 1900s. My mother was born in Tomah in 1902 to Charles Sidney and Martha (ZELLMER) SMITH. He worked in the Cash Store and H. C. Bongers shoe store as a clerk. In 1920 he ran for, and was elected sheriff of Monroe County, which meant they had to move to Sparta. Charles' parents were George Lyman and Julia Orrisa (CORNELL) SMITH. George was born in Tomah in 1851. Julia was from Michigan. George's parents were John and Margaret (REYNOLDS) SMITH. John was born 1823-4 in Collins, Erie County, New York. I don't know if any of your SMITHs were related to any of my SMITHs, but I'm sure, in a town the size of Tomah, they knew of each other. This has been interesting. If you have relationship news, please inform me. Thank you and I hope your 2001 is a happy one. Ed DUFF
