    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Johnson,Bonger,Friske,Farr,Whithers,Blome,Daherr Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EC.2ACE/890 Message Board Post: The third building in this block was erected by Peter Johnson of the firm of Johnson & Bongers..........Like the majority of the businessmen Mr. Johnson came here with hardlly any means , and what he accumulated has been made in our city by honest, steady work. he came from Denmark in 1870 and the following year he located in Tomah, having only one summer's wages ahead which he had earned in railroading. Here he began working on the trade of shoemaker in the shop of Ludwig Friske, where he remained for 6 or 7 years. Then he opened a shop of his own, whiich he afterward sold to D. Farr in 1879 when he went to Colorado. Two years later he returned to Tomah and went into railroading again. During this time he put up a fine brick block which he afterward traded, getting in exchange , the old Wither's building and the money wherewith to start a shoe store which he opened in 1891. A year later Herman Bonger went into partnership with him and the business since than has been con! ducted under the names Johnson and Bongers. Mr. Johnson was a heavy loser in the fire last fall, as there had been no insurance on his building. Less than a year form the time of the fire, however he has completed and moved into as fine a building as there is in the city. As will be noted in our illustration this building is uniforn in style and construction with that of J.F. Blome being the same size 25 x 70 feet. The plans were drawn together, the contracts combined and let to the same person E.A. Daherr, of this city. By being built together a material savings was made on each and the symmetry of the architecture adds to the beauty of the fronts. The first floor is occupied by Johnson & Bongers and Yackel Bros. The second story will soon be finished in dwelling apartments for Mr. Johnson's family. Johnson & Bongers The shoe store at Johnson and Bongers occupies the south half of the Johnson Building with the shop for repair and custom work in the rear. It is appropriately called "THE CITY SHOE STORE" as it is the only store in Tomah devoted exclusively to footwear. Its arrangement also is true city style. The shelves extend to the 14 ft. ceiling and run the complete length of the store. All these shelves are easily reached by means of that neat and wonderfully convenient constrivance ---the patent rolling ladder. (Hope this will help a family researchers)

Baumgarten occupies the west half of the Barnes Building, second floor. Mr. Baumgarten's location in Tomah was quite recent, but he came thoroughly equiped in his art and has given close attention to it,doing a superior class of work, he has quickly established a good business. Mr. Baungarten's boyhood was spent in Morristown,Minn. After leaving college he went to St. Paul and there learned photography in the studio of the Schlattman Bros, leading photographers of that city. He remained there for six years and perfected himself in the various branches of the business, The next year he was with H. Shepherd another photogrrapher of the same city after which he was employed for a portion of the year by Zimmerman Bros. wholesale dealers in photographic supplies, to conduct a gallery at Stillwater, Minn. From there he went to La Crosse,Wis. and took charge of Varney's the leading studio in that city, remaing there a year. In January 1894 he came to Tomah and bought the Brace Gallery , located in the old Barnes building, where he remained til the fire in September. He found temporary quarters until the new Barnes Block was completed. About October 1st he moved into the new studio, whiich is declared by traveling men one of the finest in the state. it is especially painted for artistic effects and the lighting is perfectly suited to the demands of the artist. The cheerful rooms are handsomely furnished and provied with ever convenience for the customers. Mr. Baumgarten's studio is supplied with the best apparatus and he late added a fine line of scenery and backgrounds, which are such important aids to artistic work. He aims to make his work as nearly perfect as possible in every particular, and treats all customers with the same courtesy and consideration. There has been a remarkable increase in the business since Mr. Baumgarten took hold of it and he has no dull times now. Parties wanting the best class of work do not have to go away to the cities to obtain it, whether it be in photograpy, and copying, enlarging, or anything that pertains to the business. Mr. Baumgarten has been fortunate in having so competant and trustworthy an assistant as Miss Hattie Schwerer, who has been employed in his studio constantly. She is liked by everyone and performs her duties to the satisfaction of customers as well as to her employer. Source is "Tomah Journal" dated November 16, 1895. Ann

I have always felt that Sanford stemmed from John and Lydia, but have never proved that. I suspect a possible tie between Clinton Love's grandson, George, who was my husband's grandfather and his wife, Elizabeth Price Wolfe. I have never found a tie between the Price and the Wolfe family, but a family surname was not often used for a female middle name. That certainly got my attention and his kept me searching. If I find something in the future that I think you might need in your search, I will certainly let you know. Thanks, Shirley Love

I am mostly working on a hunch, trying to figure out what became of my husband's great-great-grandfather "Bert Price". I have a bio from Van Buren county MI genweb, on Allen Odell. In it it talks about the Price family: " ...Lydia Jane Price who was born in New York state, August 10, 1835, a daughter of John Price and granddaughter of Benjamin Price, who spent his last years at the home of a son in Ohio. ...John's wife whose maiden name was Lydia Sanford, died at the age of 49 years. They reared eight children, namely: Horatio, Lucy Ann, George, Sanford, Barton, Oliver, Milo and Lydia J...." I have info on Horatio Nelson Price who bought land in Michigan, that says he is from Monroe county NY. He married Maria Johnson in Kalamazoo MI 1844, and died in 1867, Allegan county MI. I am thinking that his brother, Barton Price is the Bert Price I am trying to find. Info on the Family Search web site shows Barton Price born about 1821 at Sandy Hill NY, which is now in Washington county. I have found nothing else on the Price line with the exception of Lucy Ann Price who married Sewell Rice. To complicate things, Lucy would be the sister-in-law AND the mother-in-law of my husband's great-great-grandmother who remarried after Bert Price's death, to Lucy's son Edward H. Rice. But all things said, I still am not sure if the Sanford Price in Ohio is the one from this family. There is only one other one on the 1880 census, and he lives with his father in NY. I would appreciate it, if you find anything that might shed some light on all this, let me know. I will recheck my sources for the Love family name also. By the way, that's a nice name.

Surnames: Sherwood,Robinson,Hall,Whitenack Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EC.2ACE/887 Message Board Post: The front half of the second story of the Barnes building is occupied by the dental parlors of Dr. H.H. Sherwood. Dr. Sherwood came to Tomah in 1885 from Sparta; where he was in partnership with Dr. Hall who had previously been his preceptor in dentistry while in Elroy. Dr. Hall was a dentist of great skill and since has relocated to Londan,England where he has a large and lucrative practice. About a year after locating in Tomah Dr. Sherwood bought the George Robinson place, where his office has been located ever since until he removed to his present fine quarters He occupies a suite of six rooms which were arranged partitioned and finshed specially for his use. The genial Doctor's hosts of friend are glad ot see him located in this elegant office, with a large and firmly established practice. His practice is not merely local, but comes from all the neighboring towns and among his steady patrons are many from Sparta and other places which are not supplied with dentists. During his 10 years practice here people have found that Dr. Sherwood's work stands the test, that he treats rich and poor alike and his charges are always reasonable. Patients can feel sure of candid advice and honest work. The Doctor keeps abreast of the times in everything that pertains to his business. Lately , ill health has caused frequent interruptions in Dr. Sherwood's prctice making it impossible for him to attend to work as promptly as he wished; finding it necessary to have another dentist with him, he has secured Dr.C.A. Whitenack a graduate of the Chicago Dental College, who has had eight years experience in Chicago and other large cities, east and west. In him Dr. Sherwood had an able assistant for whose comptence he can vouch and the same guarantee goes with all his work as with that of Dr. Sherwood himself.

Our brickwall, Clinton Love, was living next to Sanford and Phoebe Price in 1870 in Jefferson, Monroe Co, WI. The Loves were also from NY, and Phoebe's family, the Austins have some ties to our family. I have gone through that neighborhood of 1870, and as a matter of fact, nearly all of those listed are, in one way or another, tied to our family. If you are interested in seeing these notes I would be happy to share them with you. Maybe, together, we can find earlier ties that might lead to Clinton's and/or Sanford's family. Shirley Love

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Barnes,Eaton,Doxtader,Darling,Riley,Rice ,Schalle,Reynolds,Winter, Sherwood Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EC.2ACE/884 Message Board Post: This handsome structure occupies the northeast corner of the block at the intersection of Monowan Street with Superior Avenue. The owner of the building is Lewis S. Barnes, who has been so long a resident of Tomah and whose life is intimately connected with the history of this place, that we can not refraim fro a few biographical notes here. He was born in Ballston Springs,N.Y. in 1820 and has therefore arrived at an age much beyond what anyone would guess who judges by his erect figure and vigourous step and ceaseless activity. After coming west Mr. Barnes spent a few years in Walworth County,Wisconsin, than a short time in Richland County as a peddler. In 1861 he came to Tomah, than a little hamlet in the midst of the wilderness. But judging aright of the possibilities of the place, he had no hesitation in selecting it as a permanent location. He first engaged in the mercantile trade with Jonas Eaton who was doing business at the corner now occuppied by McCaul's house on Superior Avenue. After the death of Mr. Eaton, Harry Doxtader entered into partnership with Mr. Barnes. Later Mr. Doxtader retired from the firm and Mr. Barnes son ,James A. became a partner in the business. Soon afterward they bought the Wyatt, Kibble & Co Stock and building at the corner which Mr. Barnes has owned ever since. There he carried on a properous business without interruption until the fall of 1894, when the fire destroyed the building with its contents. Mr. Barnes than found the opportunity to retire from the mercantile trade and take his ease during his remaining years, while enjoying the handsome property he has accumulted. Mr. Barnes is Tomah's veteran merchant and he has always been a firm believer in the place he first set foot in it 34 years ago. It may be said however, that his success in business is not a matter of location or chance, but is the sure reward of the untiring industry, sound judgement and keen business sense which Mr. Barnes has always displayed. Soon after the destruction of his old building Mr. Barnes decided upon the erection of a new one and the result is the ornamental modern structure shown in our cut--a credit to the owner and to the city. The building was ready for occupancy October 16st. Darling & Riley of LaCrosse, being the contractors. It is a 25 by 80 ft. two story and a basement, with 24 foot one-story additon at the rear. The walls are of solid brick with stone trimmings the Menomonie pressed brick being used throughout. The front and side of the building are equally ornate and well proportioned. The floors and stairways are of oak and the woodwork is all oil finished. the first-story front is of heavy plate glass and a large bow window adorns the second-story front. The building supplied with city water throughout. Within and without the building is a beauty and most desirable place to do business in. Long before it was finished it was completely tenanted and there was probably no single building in the city which yields so large a rental as this. The large and finely lighted basement is occupied by Rice & Schalle's Barber Shop; the first floor by Reynolds and Winter's Store, the second floor by Sherwood's Dental Parlors and Baumgarten's Photographic Studio. (Barnes Building 1895)

Beginning in the Disper building in the business centre it spread in both directions along Superior Avenue until it swept ruins the entire block containing 10 business houses, together with a great part of their contents. Such a fire could not occur in Tomah today because of the splendid sysstem of waterworks which was completed shortly after that fire and now affords protection to the entire city.(Note this was 1895 when written) The fire entailed heavy losses upon several parties burned out, as the insurance was in most cases light and some were entirely unprotected. In a less progressive town than Tomah, it would have been a calamity requiring years to recover from. But plans for new buildings were formed during the winter to be carried into execution in the spring. The burned district has been a scene of activity this season and from ashes have risen five of the largest and finest buildings which adorn Tomah's broad and handsome business street. The buildings are L.S. Barnes, J.F. Blome and Peter Johnson. (Will continue with writing on each building and merchant etc.) Ann
