    3. Tricia, in the 1880 census there is an Elizabeth M Black, daughter of John Black and Elizabeth M. Black with a sister named Louisa C Black. John was 49, Elizabeth the mother was 44, Elizabeth the daughter was 23 and Louisa was 13. They did have servants and the father is listed as a liquor merchant. You can look at the specifics on the Family Search website, as they have the 1880 census. It's at www.familysearch.org. Father was born in "Lorane", his father born in Lorane and mother in Bavaria. Elizabeth the mother was born in New York, her father in Alselz and her mother in Baden. Elizabeth the daughter was born in New York and Louisa was born in Wisconsin. I hope this helps get you going a bit. Trisha Neal wrote: >I have an obituary for Miss Elizabeth M. BLACK who lived in Milwaukee for 82 >years. Her father was John BLACK, born in France. 3. Thank you! Interesting that her father was a liquor merchant. One of the 15 women that I have been researching, Belle HAZEN, was married to a man who was a saloon owner and she came to Minnesota from Wisconsin. Her father was also a merchant in Wisconsin. Don't know if that is a clue or not, but certainly adds to the mix. Also, the music connection is another aspect of this as Belle's husband was a well-known musician. The reason for my query is that I have a court case that was filed in Minnesota by Anna E. Durkee against Portage Mountain Mining Co. that mentions Miss Black. Evidently Anna had been working to sell shares in the mining company to Miss Black but she was never called to testify. I don't believe she ever purchased shares in the mining company as it appears from the court case records that Miss Black's creditors kept a mighty tight rein on her finances. I was curious as to why Anna was so intent on pursuing Miss Black (i.e. was she wealthy?) and found my answer with the obituary information. Thank you for such a quick response!
