This is the part of Milwaukee known as Riverwest. My house is actually in the area known as Harambee, which is directly west of Riverwest. Riverwest, as its name implies, is just west of the Milwaukee River, in the area north of where the river kind of turns west (just south of North Ave., which is actually an east-west running street). Look at this site I just found when I was looking for a map for you: http://www.uwm.edu/Library/digilib/Milwaukee/records/maps.html You need the MrSid viewer to enlarge and pan on the maps, but it gives you the link for downloading that under the description of the map. If you go to the 1898: Wright's map of Milwaukee and enlarge it, and look for sections 6, 13 and 21 (the larger numbers superimposed over the neighborhoods), you will see Riverwest (east part of those sections) and Harambee (west part of those sections). Riverwest goes from the river west to Holton St. It goes south along Reservoir Av. and north to Capitol Dr.--which I think is what they call Lake in this old map. Harambee goes from Holton St. to I-94, but since I-94 didn't exist back then, the rough boundary for what is now Harambee neighborhood would be 8th-9th St. I live just south of the intersection of George and Richards, to the northeast of the big section #21. George is now Townsend. This is a very useful map, as you can see the old street names real clearly when you enlarge it and pan around it using the MrSid viewer (which is a viewer used by Ancestry.com, so those with a subscription to Ancestry probably have this on their computers already--but it's a free download if you don't have it already). If you enlarge and look for the "R" in Milwaukee River, where it curves through Riverwest, you'll see where Bolton and Wright came together where Karen Duffy's uncle John Orzechowski drowned. I think Bolton St. has another name, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I rarely go into that neighborhood, as the first major north-south street west of the river is Humboldt. >In a message dated 3/3/05 1:11:55 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] >writes: > > > > >>This is the area of Milwaukee in which I live. >> >> > >what part of Milwaukee is this? >Ann from MI > > >==== WIMILWAU Mailing List ==== >For subscribe/unsubscribe and other general list information, please see >http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sewis/wimilwau.htm > >============================== >Search the US Census Collection.
